DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke volleyball team (8-2) will close out the non-conference portion of its 2021 spring slate Friday, Feb. 26 with the short trip to Raleigh to take on NC State (4-4). First serve is set for 7 p.m., in Reynolds Coliseum on ACC Network Extra.
LAST TIME OUT
The Blue Devils opened their 2021 home slate with a 3-0 sweep (25-17, 25-23, 25-21) over Appalachian State Wednesday evening in Cameron Indoor Stadium for their fourth straight victory.
Once again, the Blue Devils were led by
Ade Owokoniran and
Gracie Johnson with 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Owokoniran hit an impressive .370 for the match with just one error as Duke combined for a .214 clip as a team.
A CLOSER LOOK AT THE SERIES
Duke leads the series 69-37 and have won three straight matches over the Wolfpack. The two teams met twice in the fall as Duke secured a 3-2 (25-19, 23-25, 25-8, 23-25, 15-12) win on Sept. 23 before a 3-1 (25-16, 25-22, 23-25, 25-21) win on Sept. 26 in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
SCOUTING THE WOLFPACK
The Wolfpack went 4-4 both overall and in conference play in the fall. NC State went 0-4 to start the 2020 season before rallying to win four straight heading into the spring.
The Wolfpack are led by Jade Parchment with 118 kills and a .224 hitting percentage to rank fourth in the ACC while Pam Chukwujekwu has 35.0 blocks to her name to lead the team and be sixth in the conference at the net. Setter Kristen McDaniel has dished 305 assists so far this year and is tabbed fifth in the league.
AMONG THE TOP IN THE ACC
The Blue Devils enter Friday's match in the top five of ACC statistics in eight different categories: opponent hitting percentage (1st), opponent assists (3rd), opponent kills (4th), blocks (3rd), opponent blocks (3rd), service aces (5th), opponent service aces (4th) and digs (2nd).
Duke owns 624 total digs through 10 contests for a 16.42 dig/set average and has accumulated 54 service aces (1.42 aces/set). In the fall, Duke once led the nation in blocks per set and is now third in the conference with 97.0 total team blocks and 2.55 blocks/set. Duke leads the ACC in opponent hitting percentage (.143).
BLOCK PARTY MOVES TO THE SPRING
Duke's block has continued to be a strong point of emphasis through 10 games in 2020-21. Duke owns 97.0 total team blocks for a 2.55 blocks/set avergae. The Blue Devils' best middle blockers from the 2019 season continue to make an impact this year as
Lily Cooper and
Lizzie Fleming combined for 82 blocks and 10 solo.
Rookie
Georgia Stavrinides is fifth in the conference with 31 blocks (1.19 blocks/set) while sophomore Fleming checks in at ninth with 42 (1.11 blocks/set). Cooper (40, 1.05),
Ade Owokoniran (25, 0.66) and
Gracie Johnson (19, 0.51) round out Duke's ACC blocking presence.

Duke has five players with 50+ kills as junior
Ade Owokoniran leads the team with 114 and a .185 hitting percentage. Sophomore
Gracie Johnson checks in with 103, followed by senior
Payton Schwantz with 86 and a whopping .277 hitting percentage. Junior
Lily Cooper adds in 78 and sophomore
Lizzie Fleming has 62. Schwantz has been sidelined the last two games.
Duke currently owns a .222 hitting percentage and limits its opponents to a .143 clip.
SETTIN' IT UP
Duke has split time between two setters this season with junior
Alex Springate and sophomore
Camille Nazor. Springate has dished 207 assists so far through 10 contests for a 5.59 assist/set average while Nazor has 113 to her name. This spring, Springate is averaging 19.5 assists/match.
1,000-DIG CLUB
Junior libero
Mackenzie Cole became the 24th Blue Devil in program history to reach the 1,000-dig plateau with her 25-dig performance against VCU on February 9. Cole now owns 1,024 career digs and ranks fourth in the conference.
