Golfer Cliff Perry arrived on the Duke campus in 1933. His exploits on the golf course began attracting attention the following year when he was the Southern Conference champion and co-champion in the state meet.
Perry was the state golf co-champion again in 1935. In 1936 as team captain, Perry captured the state and Southern Conference championships and helped Duke to both team crowns.
A pupil of long-time golf mentor Dumpy Hagler, Perry helped lead the Devils to two Southern Conference titles and two state championships in three seasons, with what Hagler calls a very solid game.
"Cliff Perry played a very fine and solid game of golf. He was a good putter and very accurate off the tee. He didn't get into trouble much. He was also a perfect gentleman and fine student."
He has also been an active alumnus, having served on the Athletic Council, as president of the General Alumni Association and on the Board of Trustees since 1966.
