Neither team had many opportunities to score in the first half, as the Blue Devils outshot the Demon Deacons 7-3.
The score remained tied until 88:02 when sophomore defender Maegan Lobo-Berg (Portland, Ore.) took a pass from sophomore midfielder Carly Fuller (Portland, Ore.) and went down the sideline and hit a left foot cross which Sanders deflected past Wake Forest goalkeeper Tracy Chao. The goal was the fifth of the season for Sanders.
Freshman goalkeeper Thora Helgadottir (Kopavogur, Iceland) picked up her second individual shutout of the year as she made two saves in the victory.
"At this point in the season, to be 3-1 in the ACC is outstanding," said Duke head coach Bill Hempen. It was a good win for us since we were coming off two losses."
Duke returns to action on Sat., Oct. 7, when the Blue Devils host No. 2 ranked Clemson at Koskinen Stadium at 7 p.m. Clemson enters the game with a perfect 12-0 (3-0 ACC) record.
