Clemson Edges Women's Soccer in NCAA Tournament

CLEMSON, SOUTH CAROLINA - Sophomore Deliah Arrington scored early in the first overtime period in lifting third-seeded Clemson to a 2-1 win over Duke in the second round of the 2000 NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament in Clemson, S.C. on Saturday night at Riggs Field. Clemson advances to the NCAA's round of 16 where the will play the winner of the Florida-Florida State match on Nov. 17, at 7:00 p.m. The win improves Clemson to 18-2-1, while Duke finished the season with a 14-8-1 record.

"It's really a shame that one of these two teams had to get knocked out this early in the tournament," said Duke head coach Bill Hempen. "Our kids would probably trade any of those two victories for a victory tonight but the Clemson kids played hard and both teams left it out on the field tonight."

Clemson scored early in the first half at the 1:01 mark when freshman Lindsay Browne tried to crossed the ball to the center, but Duke's goalkeeper Thora Helgadottir (Kopavogur, Iceland) deflected the ball back to Browne. She then sent a pass to Heather Beem who sent a shot from six yards out to the center of the net. The goal was Beem's sixth of the season while Browne collected her team lading 11th assist of th year.

Duke tied the score at 1-1 at the 59:52 mark after Clemson's Audria Lyons miscleared the ball in the box sending the ball into the air. Duke's sophomore Alison Sanders (Summerville, S.C.) received the ball in the box and sent a shot from eight yards out to the left side of the goal for her seventh goal of the year.

In the first overtime period, senior Julie Augustyniak played the ball from the left to sophomore Cindy Mullinix, who dribbled to the near post past a Duke defender, drawing Duke goalkeeper Helgadottir from the goal. Mullinix then crossed the ball to Arrington, who finished from close range giving Clemson the victory. The goal was Arrington's 11th of the year.

"I can't say enough about Duke, said Clemson head coach Ray Leone. After having to play on Wednesday night, they came in here and played extremely hard. They are an excellent team and they deserve a great deal of credit. I thought our team showed great character and we're very pleased to get past a very good Duke team.
