The Duke women's soccer team was eliminated from the NCAA Women's College Cup after a 2-0 loss to top-seeded North Carolina on Sunday afternoon at Fetzer Field. The Blue Devils ended their season at 8-10-1, while the Tar Heels improved to 21-0 on the year and will advance to the round of 16 to play Rutgers next weekend.
"I am so proud of my team and I'm proud to be the coach of this team," said Duke head coach Robbie Church. "For our team to play 150 minutes of soccer on Friday and come in here and compete like we did today is unbelievable. Congratulations to Carolina-they're a great team."
Carolina took the lead on a goal by sophomore midfielder Jordan Walker at 26:54. Freshman midfielder Anne Felts and sophomore forward Alyssa Ramsey assisted on the goal with Walker gathering Ramsey's cross in the penalty area and finishing into the lower right corner.
Less than eight minutes later, the Tar Heels added an insurance goal as senior midfielder Anne Remy sent a ball from the right side into the penalty area for sophomore midfielder Maggie Tomecka, who finished the play with a header into the upper left corner.
Both teams had some excellent chances to score in the final 55 minutes but were unable to score. UNC ended up with a 19-8 shots advantage and an 11-2 edge in corner kicks. Both starting goalkeepers played extremely well with sophomore Thora Helgadottir making six saves for Duke and senior Kristin DePlatchett four saves for North Carolina.
Senior forward Sarah Pickens had Duke's best chance with eight minutes to go in the game as she took a shot from about 10 yards out that hit the crossbar.
"We came out with a great effort, but let down a bit after the first goal," said Pickens. "But I'm still impressed with how we played and proud of our team after Friday's match."
