TALLAHASSEE, FLA - Second-seeded Clemson scored two goals in the second period to give the Tigers a win over sixth-seeded Duke in the semifinals of the 2002 ACC Women's Soccer Tournament at the Seminole Soccer Complex. Despite outshooting the Tigers 22-20, Duke was unable to capitalize and fell 2-0.
Seven minutes into the second period, Clemson's Lindsay Brown headed a pass from Lydia Vandenbergh past Blue Devil goalie Thora Helgadottir. Allison Graham was also credited with an assist on the play.
Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year Deliah Arrington gave 12th-ranked Clemson (14-6-0) an insurance goal when Allison Mitchell found Arrington down the middle with just under 12 minutes to play. Arrington shot the ball from in the box at the 78:59 mark to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead.
"We played well tonight," stated Duke head coach Robbie Church. "The first goal is always key; I was a little disappointed in that first goal. We had our opportunities, and we had a lot of shots. We just didn't capitalize on them."
Despite allowing two goals, Helgadottir was sensational in goal for the 24th-ranked Blue Devils and was credited with six saves. She was credited with four saves, all of the spectacular variety, in the second half. Her counterpart, Clemson's Lauren Heos, was credited with nine saves in earning her fourth shutout of the season.
Clemson defeated Duke, 3-2, in overtime during the regular season and has now defeated the Blue Devils three consecutive times dating back to the 2001 season.
The first period was played evenly between both teams. Duke (9-9-2) had a slight edge with eight shots to Clemson's seven, but the Tigers had three corner kicks and Duke had two. The fouls were even at six and Clemson had four saves while Duke had two.
The Blue Devils must wait until Monday afternoon when the NCAA pairings are released to determine if their post season will continue. The victory for Clemson sends the Tigers into Sunday's tournament championship match against the winner of Friday night's second semifinal game between North Carolina and Maryland.
