The 12th-ranked Duke women's soccer team (13-6-1) will travel to College Station, Texas on Friday to take on Stephen F. Austin (15-4-2) at 6:00 p.m. at the Aggie Soccer Complex. The Blue Devils are seeded 12th-overall in the NCAA Tournament and will be making their 10th appearance.
In The Rankings...
Duke is ranked 14th in the Soccerbuzz.com, 12th in Soccer America and 14th in the SoccerTimes.com polls. Stephen F. Austin and SMU are not ranked, but Texas A&M is 17th in the Soccerbuzz.com, 21st in the Soccer America, 23rd in the NSCAA and 16th in the SoccerTimes.com polls.
The Series...
Duke has never faced Stephen F. Austin, owns a 2-2-1 record against Southern Methodist and owns a 1-1 record all-time against Texas A&M.
Duke In the NCAA Tournament...
Duke will be making its 10th appearance in the NCAA Tournament and will try to break a string of six straight appearances not advancing past the second round. In its first appearance in 1992, Duke advanced to the NCAA Championship game, but lost to North Carolina (9-1).
The last time the Blue Devils have advanced past the second round was in 1994, when Duke was in the Elite Eight, but lost to North Carolina, 3-1.
Blue Devils In the ACC Stats...
Through the ACC Tournament, Duke ranks third in the ACC with 6.75 points per contest and third with 2.20 goals per game. In goals allowed, the Blue Devils are fifth (1.25).
Inside The Opponent...
Stephen F. Austin received an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history, after defeating Southeastern Louisiana, 1-0, in the Southland Conference Championship game on Nov. 9. Kendra Cannon leads the Ladyjacks with 15 goals and four assists on the season. In goal, Natascia Michalezki leads the Ladyjacks with six shutouts and a 1.36 goals against average.
NCAA Tournament Experience...
Only seven Blue Devils on the 2003 roster were members of the 2001 squad which advanced to the NCAA Tournament second round before losing to North Carolina in the second round. Seniors Kelly Harris, Thora Helgadottir and Gwendolyn Oxenham were on the 2000 squad when they lost in the second round also.
Head Coach Robbie Church will be taking his second Duke team to the NCAA Tournament and third overall team to the postseason (Charlotte in 1998). In 1998, Charlotte advanced past the first round by defeating South Carolina, 2-0, but lost to North Carolina, 6-0, in the next round. Young Starters...
Duke boasts a starting lineup of two seniors, one junior, five sophomores and three freshmen heading into the NCAA Tournament this weekend.
All-ACC Selections...
Duke University senior Thora Helgadottir and junior Casey McCluskey headlined the 2003 All-Atlantic Coast Conference team released on Nov. 4. Also receiving accolades on the evening was sophomore defender Kate Seibert, who was named second team All-ACC and Darby Kroyer, who earned All-ACC Freshman Team accolades.
Helgadottir has started 15 games in goal for the Blue Devils and has registered a 1.44 goals against average and three shutouts against ACC opponents. In her career, Helgadottir ranks second on the Duke charts with 15 shutouts.
McCluskey has taken on a different role this season in the midfield for the Blue Devils, which has cut down on her scoring, but the junior has been an anchor for Duke in 2003. McCluskey owns three goals and five assists on the season.
Seibert, a defender from Downingtown, Pa., earned the honor after collecting six goals and two assists on the year. Her six goals ranks tied second on the Duke squad. Both Helgadottir and McCluskey were each named first team All-ACC for the third straight year.
A San Ramon, Calif., native, Kroyer has been steady for the Blue Devils in her first year scoring five goals and assisting on two others. She has started 19 of 20 contests for Duke in the midfield.
Oxenham Nets Game-Winner...
Duke senior Gwendolyn Oxenham collected her second game-winning goal of the season on Nov. 5 against Virginia in the first round of the ACC Tournament, as the Gulf Breeze, Fla., product headed in a goal off a Rebecca Moros cross. It marked the third goal of the season for Oxenham.
Blue Devil freshman Darby Kroyer connected on Duke's first goal of the match to even the score 1-1 early in the second half, off an assist from Carolyn Riggs. Senior Thora Helgadottir registered the victory in goal for Duke with four saves on the evening.
Duke Dominating Of Late...
Prior to the North Carolina contest on Nov. 7, over the last six contests Duke had outscored its opponents by a 12-3 ledger, which included three shutouts. The six goals allowed against UNC was a season high.
Ford Named To Soccerbuzz.com Team of the Week...
Carolyn Ford earned Soccerbuzz.com Team of the Week honors on Nov. 6 as the sophomore led Duke's defense to two shutout victories, while recording two assists from the back. She had an assist on Kate Seibert's goal against Gardner-Webb as the Blue Devils won 5-0 in non-conference action. The Bethesda, Md., native also had the assist on the lone goal of the match to Darby Kroyer as the Blue Devils defeated 19th-ranked Maryland to finish with their best record in the league since 2000, with a 4-3 mark.
The Seibert-Ford Connection...
So far on the season, Kate Seibert has scored six goals, which ranks tied second on the Duke squad. Of those six goals, sophomore defender Carolyn Ford has assisted on five of them.
Harris Returns...
Senior defender Kelly Harris has played in Duke's last two regular season contests after missing the first 16 matches with a leg injury. The Dallas, Texas, product started against Maryland for senior night for her first start of the season. A starter on the defensive end her first three years at Duke before being sidelined this season, Harris has played in 60 career games, while starting 50 of those contests.
Oxenham Moves Up Career Assist List...
With her assist against Gardner-Webb on Oct. 27, senior Gwendolyn Oxenham moved into tied for fifth on Duke's all-time assist list with 16. So far on the season, she leads the Blue Devils with eight assists. She needs two more to move into tied for fourth.
