WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - For the second straight Sunday, the Duke women's soccer team just couldn't get into a groove as the sixth-ranked Blue Devils fell, 1-0, to Washington State on the final day of the Wake Forest adidas Women's Soccer Classic in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Duke started off slow with only two shots over the first 45 minutes of action, while Washington State managed three shots. The score remained even until the 74th minute as Rachel Rodrick connected on a goal for the third straight contest.
"I thought we played well, but we just showed our youth a little today," said Duke head coach Robbie Church. "We had a few let downs on both ends of the field. I take my hat off to Washington State. You could tell it was going to be a one-goal game. They did a better job of sticking to there game plan."
For the game, the Blue Devils were outshot 9-8. In goal for Duke was junior Kate Straka, who finished with five saves in 90 minutes. Washington State improves to 2-4, while Duke falls to 4-1-1.
"We didn't generate any offense or make good decisions today," said Church. "Hopefully, we will learn from this and get better."
The Blue Devils will next host the Duke adidas Classic on Friday, Sept. 19 and Sunday, Sept. 21. Top-ranked North Carolina will battle fourth-ranked UCLA on Friday at 5:00 p.m. and Duke will take on Richmond on Friday at 7:00 p.m. Sunday's action includes Duke vs. UCLA at 12:00 p.m. and North Carolina versus Richmond at 4:30 p.m. There will be a men's soccer game in-between the matches on Sunday as the Blue Devils host Maryland at 2 p.m.
