DURHAM, N.C. - Senior day at Koskinen Stadium on Sunday turned out to be a rout as the 10th-ranked Duke women's soccer team rolled to a school-record 9-3 victory over Virginia Tech to improve to 12-4 overall, 5-2 in ACC action.
"It was senior day here and I am very happy that we had this type of performance today," said Duke Head Coach Robbie Church. "Over the past four years, these seniors have worked very hard and helped our program grow."
In the contest, a number of school records were tied and broken-- Sophomore Rebecca Moros had a school-record four assists in the contest; Duke tied a school record with nine goals scored; Duke had a school-record 30 points in the game and Duke had a school-record 12 assists in the match. The four assists by Moros also tied an ACC single game record, which was held by Keri Nelson of Clemson.
"Today we had a big step-up from Friday and that is very exciting," said Moros. "It is nice to have the school record, but you cannot have an assist without somebody putting it in the back of the goal so I give my teammates all the credit for the assists."
The Blue Devils started the game off with a goal in the first six minutes as Moros sent a free kick into the box from 30 yards out to a streaking Darby Kroyer, who headed in her third goal of the season. Virginia Tech came right back to net a goal of their own at the 13th minute as Ashley Stinson registered a goal from 20 yards out on a breakaway, with an assist from Ryan Johnson.
Then after 20 minutes of scoreless action, Duke showed why it has one of the top scoring offenses in the nation as the Blue Devils collected four goals over the next 17 minutes to take a commanding 5-1 lead.
In a goal that was very similar to the first Blue Devil tally, junior Carolyn Ford sent a free kick into the box to a streaking Kate Seibert for a header from eight yards out over the leaping hands of the Virginia Tech goalkeeper, Mallory Soldner, at the 33:03 mark. Duke would go up 3-1 in a little over two minutes later as sophomore Rachel-Rose Cohen got everything started by beating two Hokie defenders in the middle of the field and found Moros who took two shots, before Sarah McCabe was able to tap in her sixth goal of the season from five yards, out off a rebound.
The score would remain 3-1 at the end of the first half with the Blue Devils holding a 12-2 shot advantage.
Duke continued its scoring binge early in the half as senior Casey McCluskey wouldn't be left out of the action as Moros sent a corner kick in from the left side and McCluskey blasted a rocket in the right corner of the net past a diving Soldner for her 14th goal of the season. Then, Kroyer added her first career two-goal performance as she nailed a 10-yard tally off assists from freshman Lorraine Quinn and McCluskey. Duke would hold a 5-1 lead with almost 40 minutes remaining.
"Casey set the tone early in the match and everyone else followed her tone," said Church. "She was running at players and being aggressive with it. I like to see her scoring goals and continue doing what she has done."
With a commanding Blue Devil lead, Virginia Tech would not quit as the Hokies added a Duke own goal and then Heather Hallberg had a fourth goal of the season, off an assist from Erin Moore, to cut the Blue Devil lead to 5-3.
"Rebecca Moros has been a great player for is all year," said Church. "She was a very good freshman last year and did well for us, but this year she has taken her game to another level. To set a school record with all the players who have played here in the past, that is impressive."
Duke would add four more goals on the afternoon by Quinn, junior Carolyn Riggs, McCabe and McCluskey. It marked the fifth time this season McCluskey has totaled two or more goals in a game, while McCabe had her second two-goal performance of her sophomore campaign. A product of Springfield, Va., McCluskey registered her ACC-best eighth game-winning goal of the season. McCluskey now owns 39 career goals and 90 career points, which both rank second all-time at Duke.
In goal for the Blue Devils, senior Kate Straka improved to 4-0 on the season as she finished with four saves in 90 minutes of work. Duke finished with a 25-7 shot advantage and 5-1 lead in corner kicks. Along with Straka, McCluskey and Lauren Simel were honored before the game for senior day. All three started their final regular season match at Koskinen Stadium.
Duke will next travel to Maryland on Saturday, Oct. 23 for a 7:00 p.m. contest.
