TALLAHASSEE, FLA.- In a match-up of top-10 teams, the sixth-ranked Duke and ninth-ranked Florida State Women's Soccer teams did not disappoint the Tallahassee crowd on Sunday as the Seminoles pulled out a thrilling 2-1 double-overtime victory over the Blue Devils at the Seminole Soccer Complex. The loss for Duke is its second straight Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) defeat and drops the Blue Devils to 11-4-1, 5-4 in the ACC, while the Seminoles improve to 14-2-0, 7-2.
“It was a great game and one of the best games of the year,” said Duke Head Coach Robbie Church. “Florida State is a very good team and we played well today also. Both teams played at a very high level and are two of the top 10 teams nationally. We played hard for 90 minutes and it is as shame we had to lose.”
Duke's excellent defense shutout Florida State in the first half and limited the Seminoles to only one shot, which was the team's lowest total in any half this year. The Blue Devils were held to only three shots over the first 45 minutes and the score was knotted, 0-0, at the end of the first period.
Florida State's Sel Kuralay changed all that with the quickest second half goal in Seminole school history. Just 10 seconds into the second half, the Australian Olympian picked up a loose ball at about 25 yards from goal. The striker turned and fired a low shot to the left post. Duke keeper Allison Lipsher got a finger on the shot but not enough to keep it out of the net.
The Blue Devils struck back less than nine minutes after the FSU goal. Duke's Darby Kroyer took a page from Kuralay's book and also picked up a loose ball from over 20 yards away. The junior tri-captain from San Ramon, Calif., fired a shot over the top of Florida State goalkeeper Ali Mims to bring the game level, 1-1.
Neither team was able to cash in during the remainder of regulation, but the Blue Devils had an excellent opportunity in the 88th minute as senior Kate Seibert hit the crossbar in a scramble in front of the Seminole goal.
Florida State did have a chance at the golden goal just one minute into the first overtime period. Kirsten van de Ven got in behind the backline on a bouncing service. She fired a shot trying to go over the top of Lipsher but the Blue Devil keeper snared it out of the air to preserve the tie.
The Seminoles put the game away in the 105th minute as Van de Ven started the play by feeding Mami Yamaguchi the ball just inside the 18 to the left side. The sophomore midfielder went back post for the game winner as she fell to the ground fighting off a leg cramp.
Florida State finished the match with an 11-9 shot advantage.
Duke will next host Miami on Friday, Oct. 28 at 7:00 p.m., which will mark senior night for seven Blue Devil seniors.
