DURHAM,N.C. ? In the final exhibition contest of the 2005 campaign, the eighth-ranked Duke women's soccer team fell, 2-0, to South Carolina on Saturday evening at Koskinen Stadium in Durham, N.C. The Blue Devils will next host UNC Greensboro on Friday, Aug. 26 to open the regular season.
“I wasn't very pleased with the way we played tonight,” said Duke Head Coach Robbie Church. “At times I did see some good things but we have a lot to work on before we open the season against UNC Greensboro on Friday.”
Duke jumped out to an early shot advantage but never truly had a very good opportunity to score in the first period. South Carolina needed only one shot attempt in the first stanza to take a 1-0 lead as Mary Worthen connected on a goal off assists from Alex Mouton and Darcel Mollon at the 31:51 mark.
At halftime, the Blue Devils held a 6-1 shot advantage.
To begin the second half, Duke came out of the lockerroom fired up and ready to even the score but was held to only one shot attempt over the final 45 minutes of action. South Carolina registered its second goal of the match at the 63:44 mark as Courtney Cobbs hit the right corner of the net to beat Blue Devil goalkeeper Allison Lipsher.
For the game, Duke held a 7-2 shot advantage and 10-1 lead in corner kicks but couldn't get its offense together. Lipsher played 69 minutes in the net allowing two goals, while senior Alexis Morant played 20 minutes.
In two exhibition contests, Duke defeated UNC Wilmington, 5-3, on Aug. 18 and fell, 2-0, to South Carolina.
Notes: Senior Kate Seibert left the game in the second half due to an ankle injury ... the Blue Devils will open the season on Friday versus UNC Greensboro and then will play the next four matches on the road ... over the weekend, Soccer America released its 2005 preseason poll with Duke ranked No. 8.
