DURHAM, N.C.-- The 22nd-ranked Duke Women's Soccer team closed out the weekend with a 3-0 victory over Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) rival, N.C. State on Sunday at Koskinen Stadium. The Blue Devils improved to 7-4-1 overall and 3-1 in the ACC, while the Wolfpack fell to 6-3-2, 1-2.
“We started off great because N.C. State has had some good wins this year,” said Duke Head Coach Robbie Church. “We just took them right completely out of the game at the beginning. We did some very good things. Overall, I thought it was an absolutely great effort.”
The Blue Devils came out on the attack from the beginning as they registered five shots over the first 11 minutes of action.
Duke got on the board early in the first half as freshman Sara Murphy sent a perfect pass from behind the midfield line down to fellow freshman Elisabeth Redmond. Redmond, who is from Morristown, N.J., one-timed it with her left foot into the top-right corner of the Wolfpack goal from 16 yards out in the 12th minute. The goal was her third of the season.
“It was a great shot,” said Church. “She turned, came in and just caught the thing. It was like a laser. We had a beautiful angle from the sidelines too. You could see it just rise and go up to the top corner. It was an key early goal and we started playing with a lot more confidence after it.”
In the 30th minute sophomore Lorraine Quinn sent a cross from the left side and N.C. State's Jessica O'Rourke tried to head the ball away from the net but it went into the Wolfpack goal to give Duke a 2-0 lead.
The Blue Devils took the first 11 shots of the match until the 9:58 mark when the Wolfpack collected their first attempt as O'Rourke booted a right-footed ball just over the goal. Duke went to half with a 2-0 lead and a 13-1 shot advantage.
Both teams battled on both ends of the field for the first 25 minutes of the second stanza until the Blue Devils collected their third goal of the contest at the 69:53 mark. Senior Lauren Tippets had a great move around a Wolfpack defender as she entered the goal box on the right side. Tippets, a product of Menlo Park, Calif., then feeded a nice ball to freshman KayAnne Gummersall who found the back of the right corner of the net for her team-best sixth goal of the season.
For the game, Duke outshot N.C. State, 19-4, and matched a season-high with three goals scored. The Blue Devils also posted a 7-1 corner kick advantage.
In goal for the Blue Devils, junior Alison Lipsher finished with one save and notched her 22nd career shutout. Megan Connors added three saves in the net for the Wolfpack.
“It has been great,” commented Church on their improvement since the loss at Virginia. “I cannot ask for anything else. We have two wins, two shutouts, created a number of opportunities and scored on those opportunities.”
Duke will next host North Carolina on Sunday, Oct. 8 at 2:00 p.m.
