COLLEGE PARK, MD.-- The 24th-ranked Duke Women's Soccer Team registered a season-high 37 shots on Saturday at Ludwig Field, but couldn't get any in the back of the net as the Blue Devils finished in a scoreless tie, 0-0, at Maryland. Duke now sits at 7-5-2, 3-2-2 in the ACC, while the Terrapins are 4-8-3, 0-5-2.
“Overall, we had our moments today,” said Duke Head Coach Robbie Church. “You want to create opportunities, but you also want to finish them. We did a good job of creating those opportunities but didn't do a good job of finishing.”
The Blue Devils jumped out on the Terrapins early with five shots over the first 13 minutes. Then at the 14:21 mark, sophomore Christie McDonald sent a cross to sophomore Lorraine Quinn who fired a shot that went just wide of the goal. Quinn had another attempt less than two minutes later when she dribbled through the Maryland defense and found herself with a one-on-one with Terrapin goalkeeper Nikki Resnick, but Resnick came off her line and made a brilliant sliding save, robbing Quinn of a goal.
Maryland had an excellent scoring opportunity in the 20th minute as Kelly Rozumalski blasted a shot from far left that curled at the goal, but Duke goalkeeper Allison Lipsher made a nice save and held on as the ball almost trickled across the goal line.
Quinn had her third good scoring chance in the 34th minute as senior Sarah McCabe sent a perfect through ball from the left corner and Quinn turned to shoot from eight yards out, but the ball hit the crossbar and Maryland was able to knock it away.
At the end of the first half, Duke held an 18-6 shot advantage. Resnick for Maryland carried the Terrapins with eight saves over the first 45 minutes of action.
The second half was much like the first with the Blue Devils outshooting the Terrapins, 12-8, but neither team could put the ball in the back of the net. Over the two overtime periods, Duke outshot Maryland, 7-2, but Resnick kept the Blue Devils from getting on the board. Duke concluded the game with a total of 37 shots and the Terrapins added 16. Resnick turned in 14 saves, while Lipsher had five in goal for the Blue Devils.
“We got impatient and ended up taking longer shots as well as a couple of shots hit the crossbar today,” said Church. “It was our third match of the week and we looked a little sore and tired.”
The Blue Devils were led on the day by senior Rebecca Moros with eight shots and senior Darby Kroyer added seven. Moros posted four shots on goal, while Kroyer had two. Duke held an 11-5 corner kick advantage over the 110 minutes.
Duke will return home for two contests this week. On Thursday, Oct. 19 the Blue Devils will host Clemson at 7:00 p.m. and then on Sunday, Oct. 22 will take on Florida State at 12:30 p.m. Both matches will be played at Koskinen Stadium. Note the match time change for the FSU game as it was originally scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
