DURHAM, N.C. ? The Duke adidas Classic came to a close on Sunday with 16th-ranked Duke and Marquette finishing with a 1-1 tie at Koskinen Stadium in Durham, N.C. The Blue Devils drop to 4-3-1 and the Golden Eagles move to 2-3-3.
“We created opportunities but we didn't finish it off,” said Duke Head Coach Robbie Church. “We cannot keep playing games and not score goals. We scored one goal this weekend and that is really disappointing. Going into the match we have been talking about playing harder on Sundays. I thought at times we played hard and we dominated both overtimes. We had a number of opportunities to score goals in different parts of the game and we didn't finish them.”
Duke opened up the scoring early in the first half as the Blue Devils hit on a set play off a corner kick at the 5:21 mark. Senior Lauren Tippets sent a perfect, right-footed ball into the box where sophomore Christie McDonald headed in her first goal of the season that went off the goalkeeper into the bottom left corner of the net.
“It was a corner kick and I was left pretty open as my defender went in front of me,” said McDonald of her goal scored. “I just headed it to the far post.”
The Blue Devils controlled the ball for the first 45 minutes of action and held a 4-2 shot advantage in the stanza.
Marquette was able to even the score, 1-1, in the 50th minute as Meghan Connelly found Lauren Weber, who blasted a 23-yard shot just over Duke goalkeeper, Allison Lipsher's head for her second goal of the season.
The Blue Devils had a number of other scoring opportunities in the second half, but couldn't put the ball in the net. Marquette nearly put the match away at the 87:20 mark as Mar Weber sent a shot that went off the crossbar, but the Blue Devils were able to take back control of the ball.
At the end of the second period, Duke held a 10-6 shot advantage.
In the first overtime, both teams had chances in the other teams box but neither were able to score. The Blue Devils received shots from seniors Darby Kroyer and Tippets, while Marquette was held without a shot attempt in the first extra period.
Duke came out in the second overtime on the attack as sophomore Lorraine Quinn took a shot from the left corner of the box that Golden Eagle goalkeeper Laura Boyer corralled for her fourth save of the match. Blue Devil sophomore Kelly Hathorn also rocketed a right-footed shot from 35-yards out that went just high and Moros fired a 19-foot shot that was saved by Boyer. Neither team were able to get back on the scoreboard and the match concluded in a 1-1 tie.
For the game, Duke outshot Marquette, 16-7, and for the weekend the Blue Devils held a 30-17 shot advantage but only scored one goal. In goal for the Blue Devils, Lipsher finished with three saves, while Boyer added five saves for the Golden Eagles.
“We just talked with our coaches about how we need to be our best when we are in the 18,” said Tippets. “That hasn't exactly been the case this season. So I think that is going to be our goal going into ACC games. We need to relax, be more composed in the box and finish.”
North Carolina picked up the Duke adidas Classic team champion honors as the Tar Heels defeated Marquette, 2-0, and Florida, 1-0. Heather O'Reilly and Kristi Eveland of North Carolina were selected Offensive and Defensive MVP for the classic, respectively. Other members of the Duke adidas Classic All-Tournament team were Brittni Goodwin (Florida), Lauren Hyde (Florida), Ashley Harris (Florida), Yael Averbuch (UNC), Nikki Washington (UNC), Rachel-Rose Cohen (Duke), Christie McDonald (Duke), Rebecca Moros (Duke), Megan Connelly (Marquette), Lauren Weber (Marquette) and Michelle Pitzl (Marquette).
Duke will next travel to Virginia Tech on Sept. 21 for a 7:00 p.m. match time, which will mark the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) opener for the Blue Devils.
