BIRMINGHAM, ALA.-- Seniors Rebecca Moros and Sarah McCabe each registered goals on Friday on the first day of the University of Alabama-Birmingham (UAB) Nike Classic to lead 12th-ranked Duke to a 2-0 victory over UAB at the West Campus Field in Birmingham, Ala.
“Overall this was a solid performance by both our offense and defense tonight,” said Duke Head Coach Robbie Church. “I am very happy as we did some nice things in the first half. We had success with the players on the flank and our service in, which created a lot of good scoring opportunities.”
In the 15th minute of action, Duke freshman KayAnne Gummersall sent a cross to McCabe who then took a shot at the goal, but was blocked. McCabe corralled the ball once again and sent a pass to Moros, who connected on her third goal of the season from 12 yards out. A native of Larchmont, N.Y., Moros now owns a team-high eight points on the year and has notched at least one point in four of the five matches.
The score remained 1-0 in favor of the Blue Devils at the end of the first stanza, with Duke holding a 5-0 shot advantage.
Duke wasted no time in the second half to increase the Blue Devil lead as McCabe pressured UAB goalkeeper Katie Forbis at the start and was able to pick the ball from her. A product of Sarasota, Fla., McCabe was able to beat Forbis and tucked away her second goal of the year from six yards out only 36 seconds into the half. The goal for McCabe is the 21st of her career, which moves her into a tied for 10th place on Duke's all-time scoring list.
“Sarah's goal was huge for us to start the second half,” said Church. “She did a great job of pressing the keeper and once she got the ball, scoring.”
Behind excellent play from junior goalkeeper Allison Lipsher and the Blue Devil defense, Duke collected its third shutout of the season. Lipsher, who is from Honolulu, Hawaii, has been in net for all three shutouts this season and now owns 20 for her career.
For the game, Duke outshot UAB, 9-4, and held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The Blue Devils improve to 4-1, while the Blazers fall to 0-4. Duke will next face Kansas (3-1) on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. (EST) to conclude the tournament.
“This was a tough match to play,” said Church. “UAB was ready to play and they were physical. On Sunday, Kansas will be another tough opponent as they played well tonight against Alabama.”
