DURHAM, N.C.?The Duke University wrestling team turned in a valiant effort tonight against ACC foe Maryland, but was unable to overtake the Terrapins in a 28-15 setback. Senior Addison Nuding turned in a highlight performance earning a win over a defending ACC champion.
Duke falls to 5-3 overall and 1-2 in the ACC, while Maryland improves to 6-7-1 and 2-1 against league opponents.
“Again a disappointing loss with the disappointment coming from the fact that we're not fielding our most competitive and healthy team,” head coach Clar Anderson said. “Again I thought the guys fought well. Maryland is a very strong team with four ranked wrestlers and an All-American and I thought our freshmen having to battle those guys did well. It's a great learning experience for them to see what a potential All-American wrestles like. They can learn from their mistakes and rise up from those in the future.”
The match got started at 125 pounds with Duke's Peter Terrezza going up against Terrapin Brendan Byrne. Terrezza took an early 2-0 lead in the opening minute with a takedown. Seconds later it was Byrne getting a point for an escape. The junior Terrapin added two more points for a takedown and went in front 3-2. Out of a restart, Duke's rookie 125-pounder scored a reversal to retake the lead at 4-3, but once again Byrne responded with an escape to make it 4-4 after the opening three minutes.
Byrne came out strong in the second session and registered a near fall for three points and pinned Terrezza seconds later to score six points for the Terrapins.
Going up against the No. 8/9 wrestler in Steven Bell at 133 pounds, Jack Anderson battled hard through the opening three minutes, trailing 5-1 after the first period. The Duke rookie came back in the second period and worked his way to a reversal call to make the score 7-3 with 18 seconds remaining in the session. Bell came out of the restart with an outstanding move to score four more points on a takedown and near fall.
Anderson scored an escape late in the final stanza, but a takedown by Bell at the buzzer gave him the 14-4 major decision victory.
Duke caught a tough break at 141 pounds as Spencer Jasper was forced to retire because of injury. The medical forfeit resulted in six points for the Terrapins, making it a 16-0 match.
Looking to add another ACC victory to his slate at 149 pounds, Dan Adamo lined up against Dex Lederer. Adamo took an early 2-1 lead and added another takedown late in the first period for a 4-1 advantage going into the second session. Lederer escaped Adamo's grasp for a point to make it a 4-2 dual after five minutes of wrestling.
Adamo added one more point in the third period and added a point for riding time for the 6-2 decision and three team points. The redshirt freshman is now 2-1 against conference foes and 14-12 overall this season.
Wrestling up a weight class to 157 pounds for the third consecutive match, Mike Bell went up against Kyle John. The sophomore Blue Devil turned in a valiant effort going nearly the entire seven-minute bout before John registered the technical fall with three seconds left on the clock.
Nuding turned in perhaps the best performance for Duke at 165 pounds, upsetting No. 27 and defending conference champion in Brian Letters with a 3-2 decision. Nuding got a takedown in the first period and added an escape as he executed the dual with precision to win the three team points. Leading 3-1 throughout the third period with Letters holding the point for time advantage, Nuding stayed strong and never letter his Terrapin opponent create an opportunity to score. The win was Nuding's eighth of the season.
“Addison had a great match,” Anderson said. “It's a great for him to get a win over a conference champion and it should give him confidence. He's struggled a little this year with injuries and his results this year don't reflect how good a wrestler he is. That win is an excellent result and hopefully he'll take that confidence through the rest of the ACC matches and into the tournament.
The Blue Devils cut into Maryland's lead some more with a victory by junior Voris Tejada at 174 pounds. Tejada controlled the dual throughout the seven minutes, tallying a pair of takedowns in each of the three sessions for a 12-6 decision. The 12 points is the second most Tejada has scored all season, while the win pushes his record to 19-12 on the year and to 3-0 in the ACC.
Junior John Barone moved another step closer to his 100-win mark, making quick work of Owen Smith at 184 pounds. Barone needed just 2:27 to post his third fall of the season and earn the Blue Devils six points to make it a 21-15 match. He sports a 98-29 career record and needs just two more victories to become the third Duke wrestler to win 100 bouts.
“I'm very pleased with the results from both Voris [Tejada] and John [Barone] tonight,” Anderson said. “They are performing very well for us right now.”
Competing at 197 pounds for the Blue Devils was Dan Tulley. He took on No. 10/14 Hudson Taylor as Duke tried to continue its rally. Taylor used a strong second period to earn the 10-0 major decision and put the match of Duke's reach.
Sophomore Robert Holbrook closed out the dual at heavyweight against 29th-ranked Patrick Gilmore. Battling to a scoreless first period, Gilmore went up 1-0 in the second with an escape. Wrestling up a weight class, Holbrook fought hard to get on the scoreboard, but Gilmore was able to hold on for a 2-0 decision and a 28-15 Terrapin win.
The Blue Devils next compete on Jan. 28 at Virginia Military Institute at 7:30 p.m.
