DURHAM, N.C.?Seven Duke University wrestling seniors closed out their regular season careers with an exciting 26-14 win over visiting Campbell University tonight in Cameron Indoor Stadium. The win is the 10th for the Blue Devils this season.
Duke captured its second victory over the Camels this season as Campbell dropped to 8-9 overall. The Blue Devils close out the regular season 10-5 overall and travel to the ACC Tournament on March 7.
“I am so happy for the seniors,” head coach Clar Anderson said. “I've really enjoyed working with every one of them during their careers and it's hard to believe it's already been four and five years since these guys came to Duke. With all of the seniors winning, it's a great way to finid out a career in Cameron.”
The match started at 125 pounds with rookie Peter Terrezza going up against C.J. Gittens. Looking for his 22nd win of the season, Terrezza got out in front early with a two-point takedown in the opening seconds of the first period and add two more points in the final minute for a 4-2 lead after three minutes.
Terrezza dictated the remaining four minutes of the match, including scoring six unanswered in the third session for the 13-3 major decision.
With Duke taking a 4-0 lead in the match, rookie Jack Anderson stepped onto the mat at 133 pounds looking to stretch the Blue Devil lead. Anderson scored first with a takedown, but Richie Apolinar answered with five unanswered for a 5-2 advantage after the first session. After taking a couple of injury timeouts in the opening three minutes, Anderson was forced to take a medical forfeit. The forfeit gave the Camels a narrow 6-4 lead after two matches.
Duke rookie Chris Mullen lined up at 141 pounds for his first dual match of the season. Mullen fell behind early against Campbell's top wrestler Kelin Bidelspach. Bidelspach pulled away to score five points with the technical fall.
Duke's Dan Adamo cut into the Camel lead with a strong showing at 149 pounds. The redshirt freshman used a big first period, taking a 7-1 lead after three minutes to register a 13-4 major decision.
The Camels responded with three more points as Jake Fose registered a 6-1 decision against Jared Sernoffsky at 157 pounds. The loss was just Sernoffsky's fourth of the season.
After gaining six points due to a forfeit by Campbell at 165 pounds, the Blue Devils went into the 174-pound bout tied 14-14. Competing up a weight class at 174 pounds, senior Addison Nuding turned a well-executed match against Ryan Ham. The two battled to a scoreless draw after five minutes, but it was all Nuding in the final stanza as he registered an escape and takedown for the 3-0 advantage. A final point for riding time advantage gave Nuding the 4-0 decision and his 65th win of his career.
Senior Turner Rooney closed out his career in Cameron Indoor Stadium in style with an exciting 10-5 decision over Kyle Higgins at 184 pounds. The Oklahoma City native led 2-0 after the first three minutes and stretched his advantage to 6-2 after five minutes of wrestling. Rooney added four more points for the 10-5 decision and pushed his season record to 13-11.
Competing for the 10th time this season and in his third dual match, Wade Van Sickle turned a thrilling 7-5 decision for the Blue Devils over Parker Burns. Van Sickle took a 2-0 lead in the first period and battled hard over the next four minutes to grab the two-point victory.
Duke saved perhaps the most exciting match for last as Mike Tunick stepped in at heavyweight. After getting a point from an escape in the second period, Tunick turned in an outstanding third period and edged Khiry Reid in a 5-4 decision. The senior native of Annandale, Va. scored three crucial points early in the third stanza to make it 4-0 and held on for the one-point win.
The Blue Devils take a short break before heading to the ACC Championship in Blacksburg, Va., on March 7.
