DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke women's soccer team opened a three-game homestand on Sunday evening at Koskinen Stadium with a record-breaking performance. The Blue Devils cruised to an 8-0 victory over Alabama A&M (0-7) to move to 3-3-1 on the season.
Duke notched a school-record eight goals in the first half and the match was called in the 72nd minute due to Alabama A&M not having enough players available to play. The Bulldogs had some injured players who came off the field in the second half.
"It was good; we got a lot of people some more minutes that really deserve the minutes,"Duke Head Coach Robbie Church said. "They have been working really, really hard in our training sessions and in practice. We got a win, which we need to bring us back to .500 because we are hitting a big stretch here. I think there were some positive things that came out of this."
Duke opened the scoring in the seventh minute as Rebecca Allen and Cody Newman found junior Lynnea Pappas at the top of the 18. Pappas, who is from Parma, Ohio, trapped the ball with her chest and then one-timed it into the back of the net for her second goal of the season.
The Blue Devils made the ledger 2-0 at the 9:31 mark as Newman found Allen in the box who tapped in her second goal of the year. In only 34 seconds, Duke moved the score to 3-0 as senior Elisabeth Redmond found senior KayAnne Gummersall who beat the Bulldog defenders and then used good footwork to beat Alabama A&M goalkeeper Whitney Jackson for her fourth goal of the year.
Gummersall, who is from Wilmette, Ill., now owns 27 career goals and is one shy of moving into a tie for fourth place all-time at Duke.
Duke went ahead 4-0 only 45 seconds later as Newman posted her second goal of the year off an assist from Pappas, after she had Jackson on a one-v-one opportunity. A product of Jenks, Okla., Allen notched her second goal of the match as she tapped in a shot from the six off an assist from Redmond to move the match to 5-0.
Sophomore Chelsea Canepa then rang off a hat trick over the next 16 minutes of action. A product of Phoenix, Ariz., Canepa posted her first goal in the 20th minute, second in the 27th and third in the 35th minute. She has now scored four goals over the last two contests and her four goals is tied for the team lead along with Gummersall.
"It is always nice to score goals," Canepa said. "It is always good to get a win at home but whenever you score goals it is because your team is finding you and supporting you throughout."
At the end of the first half, Duke held a 12-1 lead in shots.
No shots were taken by either team in the second half and the match was called at the 72:11 mark.
Earning her first career shutout in goal for the Blue Devils was sophomore Emily Nahas, who faced one shot and had a save. Jackson played 55 minutes in goal for the Bulldogs before Brittany Christian came in to play the final 16:29 of the contest.
The Blue Devils will next host the Duke Nike Classic on Sept. 18 and 20. Competing in the classic will be Auburn, LSU and top-ranked North Carolina. LSU and North Carolina will open the action on Friday, Sept. 18 at 5:00 p.m., followed by Duke versus Auburn at 7:30 p.m. On Sunday, Sept. 20, the Tar Heels will take on Auburn at 12:00 p.m., while the Blue Devils will host LSU to close out the weekend.
