Duke
Head Coach Robbie Church
Opening Statement:
"First of all, the University of Florida...what a fantastic year they've had and what a fantastic game they played. Congratulations
go out to them. Becky and her staff are outstanding and every year they put out a national elite program and we had to be at the top of our game. We got by, by the slimmest of margins. Obviously it's a tough way to win and a tough way to lose on penalty kicks but both teams played as hard as they could. Both teams were pressuring all over the field. It was hard to connect a pass, especially late. I think everybody has got to be proud. If anyone is looking for a game to be a showcase for women's soccer about competing, then I think that was a game to watch. I thought it was just a great game and a lot of great young ladies putting their hearts out there on the field for the game."
On whether any adjustments were made between now and the first meeting:
"Not really. I think both of us still play very similar. I think we both really like to concentrate on our own teams and we did a couple
little things different. We made some personnel adjustments depending on how were playing. Again, we've been without one of our top players who unfortunately got the flu out here so I'm just very proud of our players. That's my definition of a team. When a teammate is down, have somebody who can pick them up and that's what our girls did. They really picked them up and you know we just wanted to compete for 90 minutes hard. We knew we had to. If we didn't, we'd be sitting home. The game would've been over early and we were just really fortunate on penalty kicks. We work hard on them (penalty kicks). We started early on those and it gets old in practice some days. People want to go home and people want to get inside but we've been working on them for three weeks for this situation."
Goalkeeper Tara Campbell
On your reaction after the last kick went wide:
"I think I jumped up and down and then braced myself for the hoard running at me. It was just very exciting. I haven't seen a PK at the
college level yet until today - not even in the flow of the game - so it was a first for me. It was very exciting."
On how close the last penalty kick shot by UF's Lindsay Thompson came to going in:
"I didn't actually look and see it go past the goal. When she kicked it, I knew it was going to go wide. It was probably pretty wide
of the goal because based on the way it came off her foot I could tell that it wasn't going to go in the goal."
On what it felt like to be in that situation (penalty kicks) for the first time:
"Honestly, I'm glad we spent so much time at practice even though for the goalkeepers to practice PKs as much we do, it gets real
annoying. We take so many every practice but I'm glad we have because I've been able to talk with my coach about strategies and what I want to do and what to look for. All I could think about was, well we have worked on these...just, no pressure...just do what you've been practicing."
Florida
Head Coach Becky Burleigh
Opening Statement...
"Obviously that was a disappointing finish to a great season. I hand it to Duke, they defended hard, I thought that they played really hard. We were not able to break them down enough to get good opportunities. It just seemed like we were just a little bit out of sync in terms of our passing and connecting with each other. You have to give some of that credit to Duke for doing a good job defensively."
On what coach said at end of game...
"There is not a whole lot you can say at that point because there is nothing that is going to make anyone feel any better. This was a really, really good group. I am really proud of this team for what they accomplished up until this point and we're not going to let one game like this define what this group was. This was a really special group and I think the most disappointing part is to have such a talented team out this early. That is something that is going to weigh on us, I'm sure, but it doesn't take away from the individuals that were a part of this group. It certainly wasn't a lack of effort today - I think maybe a lack of execution. This group really played hard for each other and I think from that standpoint you can't really ask for much more."
On the play of sophomore defender Kathryn Williamson...
"I think that she played great. I felt like besides the one point blank shot that Duke had after the little scramble, I wasn't really
concerned about their offensive output. Most of that was pretty routine stuff and we could handle that. We just had to put together a series of four or five little passes because when we did that we could go through them. We had great numbers in the box and we would have a poor serve and there were times when we would have a terrific serve and not numbers in the box or we would be on the break and the pass would be just slightly behind somebody. Things like that are just a matter of execution. I didn't feel that Duke was pressing and pressing and we were hanging on, I didn't feel like that at all. I felt it was just going to come, it was just a matter of time."
Senior Goalkeeper Katie Fraine
On saves she had to make in the second half...
"I really was not all that worried about that. I thought that most of the shots that were coming were relatively easy to handle. I thought
that our defense was doing a great job at shutting them down to the point where the shots that I had to take care of were mostly right at me or within collapse-dive range. I honestly thought the whole second half that we really stepped it up and were playing much better. To me, in my head I just kept thinking it's only another second before we score, it's only another second before we score. The ball just didn't bounce our way this time."
Redshirt-Sophomore Midfielder McKenzie Barney
On the physicality of the match...
"Duke is a physical team. That was something that we knew we were getting into and it was a physical battle. We did all we could on the
physical side, and like Becky said, just couldn't put it in."
