Postgame Quotes
Duke Head Coach Robbie Church:“It's a tough game and an unfair game a lot of times. I was very proud of our kids. I thought we played well and I thought we were prepared. I thought we started off a little bit shaky the first 20 minutes. We made a couple of subs and brought in some younger players. I thought at that point the game changed with the mobility in midfield. We had a flurry in the first half that I think was a key. We struggled to get that energy goal…If we could have netted one, it would have opened up the game and given our girls belief.”
“I'm disappointed for our team because I thought they played well and were prepared. Hopefully, we get another opportunity and get to play in the NCAAs”
“When we were up at Maryland, it was the exact same kind of game. We scored first in the second half, and they scored with about 12 minutes left. We knew both teams were going to get some chances, but it was just a matter of who capitalized on them…We had a number of chances earlier and we just didn't finish ours. It would have been a completely different game if we got the first goal.”
“We had 18 shots, but only had 5 on goal. We passed up opportunities…Some of our younger players this is the first time they've been in this environment, and I think that had an effect on us. We will learn from this game.”
“You are never certain until they call your name and you see yourself on the board. I've been around long enough to know there are unexplainable situations. I think we deserve. We were one of the top 64 teams in the country. You guys saw that for sure, no question. We have quality ties, and a win over Boston College. But we won't know until Monday at 4:30, but we definitely deserve to be there.”
Duke Midfielder Kaitlyn Kerr“I think I just got the ball in the box and I wanted to get a goal right away. But the girl got a tip on it and made it go over. We have to start capitalizing on our chances because that is why we are losing.”
Maryland Head Coach Brian Pensky:“This is exciting for our kids. It's new to our kids in terms of getting to the semifinals of the ACC Championship. We take this conference very seriously; we take this championship very seriously. I'm happy for Molly (Dreska) who has been here for 5 years and for her to get the game winner and lead us into the semi-finals on Friday night. It's pretty outstanding. Our kids have been kind of second-half warriors in the second half of the season and throughout ACC play. I'm a lucky coach because I kind of sit back and watch as we are either tied or down a goal in the second-half, as was the case tonight, and somebody steps up and makes a play. Tonight it was Molly (Dreska).”
On breaking through Duke's defense…“It was a huge relief to breakthrough and get that goal. We knew coming in that this was going to be a huge challenge. I think our half of the bracket is tough even though we are the 2 seed. I think if you look at the 4 teams on our side, they are 4 very good teams. Duke comes in here having been off on Sunday, so they're pretty well rested, whereas the last 2 weekends of the season we were at Wake, at Carolina, home against FSU and home against Miami who is fighting for their lives. We come in here a little bit fatigued. Duke comes in here having gotten a second wind and really believing in themselves right now and really realizing that they're a very good team. They have some young freshmen who are the most talented in the league, so we were very prepared for a battle. We knew that at some points throughout this game we would have to weather some storms. I told our team that we have a junior/senior team and we have confidence, we have character, we have determination. I think that's what gets us through those moments in the second-half.
Maryland Midfielder Molly DreskaOn making it to the semi-final round of the ACC Championship Tournament…“This is only my second time in the five years I've played that I've been to the ACC Championship Tournament. It just seems like the last chance and we have to leave everything on the line. But just because I scored the goal tonight, it doesn't mean that everyone else wasn't dying for it. Our whole defense plays amazing every game and I don't think they get as much credit as they should.”
