Bencomo Advances to Quarterfinals at Southern Scuffle

DURHAM, N.C.-Duke University redshirt sophomore Diego Bencomo posted three victories on day one of the 2010 Southern Scuffle to lead the Blue Devils wrestling team. Bencomo advanced to the quarterfinals with the three victories, which included a win over the No. 20 wrestler in the nation.
Bencomo is the lone Blue Devil remaining after the first day of competition in the prestigious wrestling tournament. Duke sits in 30th place of 33 teams in the field.
The Phoenix native posted perhaps his biggest win of the year to start the day in the 184-pound weight class. Going up against 20th-ranked Austin Trotman of Appalachian State, Bencomo outlasted the tournament's No. 6 seed by a narrow 3-2 decision. He cruised through his next two matches, beating Kent State's Christopher Estep 6-1 and dominating Michael Brant of Navy in a 17-4 major decision.
Bencomo will go up against eighth-ranked Kevin Steinhaus of Minnesota in search of a spot in the semifinal round to start the second day of competition.
Redshirt freshman Bret Klopp had a solid showing on the first day at 174 pounds. The native of Lander, Wyo., registered his team best 12th and 13th falls of the year to start the day with a 2-0 mark. Thomas Ferguson of North Carolina stopped Klopp's run through the championship bracket with an 11-5 decision and Navy's Peter Huntley ended the Blue Devils' wins leader with a 13-5 victory in the consolation bracket.
Senior Mike Bell also garnered a victory on the day in the 141-pound division, defeating Mitchell Port of Edinboro with an 8-2 decision. Rookie 157-pounder Ryan Harding triumphed in his opening match, beating Nicholas Emison 10-3. Jared Sernoffsky, competing at 165 pounds, rounded out the Blue Devils with a win as he outlasted Rodin Ndandula of Old Dominion 6-2.
Competing unattached, sophomore Peter Terrezza captured one win, pinning North Carolina's George Hovis in 1:28 at 133 pounds.
