Seniors Voris Tejada and John Barone and sophomore Peter Terrezza split their matches on the evening, while redshirt senior Konrad Dudziak captured a convincing win in his first match back since early December.
"We wrestled against two ranked teams tonight who we knew were very strong," head coach Clar Anderson said. "With Konrad [Dudziak] back, he looked good in his win. John Barone was good and went into overtime with a ranked wrestler and was leading most of the way and Peter Terrezza had a really close match against another ranked wrestler. We had a few close losses that we needed to turn into big wins. Wrestling back-to-back matches is good and it shows our guys what we'll be facing at ACCs."
In the opening match against Virginia Tech, Duke (2-7, 0-5) started off strong with a pin from Terrezza at 125 pounds. The native of New Providence, N.J., made quick work of Schuyler Swanton to earn the six points in 2:39. Terrezza got the early takedown in the first period and controlled the rest of the way before getting Swanton on his back for the fall.
The Hokies captured the next five matches for a 24-6 lead with four contests remaining. Grabbing the second win of the night for the Blue Devils was Tejada. Sporting an unblemished ACC record, Tejada had a monster third period with seven points to earn the 14-4 major decision over John Dickson. The win pushes Tejada to 17-8 on the year and is his 93rd win of his career.
In the 184-pounds match, Duke's Diego Bencomo battled hard against No. 19 Tommy Spellman. Spellman got the initial takedown for the early 2-0 lead, but Bencomo earned a pair of escapes to even the score with 1:30 left in the second period.
Spellman started the final stanza on bottom and quickly took the narrow 3-2 lead with an escape. The Hokie junior added a takedown to emerge with a 5-2 win, his 23rd of the year.
Barone added four more points to Duke's total with a 15-4 major decision at 197 pounds. Barone used a seven-point second period, which included six back points to come away with his 13th win of the season.
The Blue Devils earned six points from a forfeit at heavyweight to make it a 27-20 final score.
Against a rested Virginia squad, Duke struggled in the early matches falling behind 15-0 after three matches. The opening match at 125 pounds was a close affair as Cavalier senior Ross Gitomer registered an escape to start the third period to break the 3-3 tie. Terrezza took his shots in the closing minute of the match, but could not garner the point to tie the match.
The Cavaliers earned three straight falls and a technical fall to go in front 29-0 with No. 3 Chris Henrich looking to widen the margin at 174 pounds against Duke's Tejada. The native of Marlton, N.J., competed well in holding Henrich to the 10-3 decision to make it a 32-0 Virginia lead.
Bencomo faced a ranked opponent for the second time in Michael Salopek in the 184-pound match. He battled hard, but dropped a 10-4 decision. The match at 197 pounds was an exciting one as Barone took Brent Jones to the brink. The Duke senior evened the score late in the match, but a takedown by Jones in overtime gave Virginia Tech the 38-0 lead in the match.
Closing out the evening was Dudziak at heavyweight. Wrestling for the first time in two months, Dudziak controlled John Danilkowicz in a 10-3 decision. The win pushes Dudziak to 9-0 on the year.
Duke returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 14 against The Citadel. The match is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
