DURHAM, N.C. – The honors keep rolling in for Duke junior
Christina Gibbons as she was named to the NSCAA Scholar All-America second team Thursday, after her excellent play on the field and work in the classroom for the 2015 campaign.
To be named to a Scholar All-America Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) throughout his or her career; start more than 50 percent of all games and be a significant contributor to the team; and be nominated by an institution that is a current NSCAA College Services member.
Gibbons, who hails from Raleigh, N.C., helped guide the Blue Devil defense to 14 shutouts and just their third NCAA College Cup appearance. She also made her mark on the offensive side collecting three goals, five assists and 11 points in 2015.
A First Team All-ACC, Second Team All-America and NSCAA All-Region selection, Gibbons and the Duke defense allowed only five goals over its final 13 matches, including the second most shutouts in school history with 14. The defender tallied two goals and one assist in the 2015 NCAA Tournament.
Gibbons joins only Christie McDonald (2007, 2008) and Carolyn Ford (2005) as NSCAA Scholar All-America recipients in Duke history.
In the classroom, Gibbons has totaled a 3.89 grade-point average at Duke. She was an Academic All-District III First Team selection this season by a vote of CoSIDA members.
Duke is coming off advancing to the NCAA College Cup title match for the third time in school history, before falling to Penn State, 1-0. The Blue Devils collected a 14-6-5 overall record, while knocking off two No. 1 seeds and a No. 2 seed on their way to the championship.
