DURHAM, N.C. – For her success both on the field and in the classroom, Duke women's soccer senior Kayla McCoy was selected as one of 10 finalists Wednesday for the 2018 Senior CLASS Award in collegiate soccer.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as a NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition. McCoy is one of six candidates who were selected to the 2018 MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List and one of two players from the ACC.
A native of Lincolnwood, Ill., McCoy has turned in an outstanding senior season so far, helping lead the Blue Devils to an 11-2-2 mark and five wins in the ACC. McCoy owns a team-high 23 points and nine goals, both standing second in the conference. She has tallied seven goals and 15 points in ACC play, both ranking No. 1 in the league.
McCoy also continues to make her mark in the Duke record books. With her goal in Saturday's win at Clemson, the Blue Devil forward now has 35 career tallies, which ties Sherrill Kester (1996-99) fourth all time. She also stands fourth with 13-career game-winning goals and sixth in career points with 84.
Off the field, McCoy has been a stud in the classroom and in the community in her time at Duke. The cultural anthropology major finished last year with a 3.79 GPA, earning United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-America and CoSIDA Academic All-District honors last season. She has also been named to the ACC Honor Roll all three seasons and is a two-time member of the ACC All-Academic Team.
McCoy participated in the Rubenstein-Bing Student-Athlete Civic Engagement Program—a collaborative service initiative between Duke and Stanford—in the summer of 2018, traveling to South Africa for a month to assist in teaching academics, sports and life skills to the local children. McCoy has also worked with Bull City Fit the last two years, a community-based wellness program located in Durham, N.C., that offers free activity sessions during the evenings and weekends that encourage and promote active living.
The finalists were chosen by a selection committee from the list of 30 men's candidates and 30 women's candidates announced in September. Nationwide fan voting begins immediately to help select the winner, and fans are encouraged to vote on the Senior CLASS Award website through November 18. Fan votes will be combined with media and Division I head coaches' votes to determine the winner. The Senior CLASS Award winners will be announced during the 2018 NCAA Women's College Cup® championship, Nov. 30 – Dec. 2.
McCoy and the Blue Devils host the final two regular season matches at Koskinen this week, taking on Louisville and Boston College. Duke battles Louisville on Thursday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. on RSN before hosting No. 8 Boston College for Senior Day on Sunday, Oct. 21 at 1 p.m. on ESPNU.
