WASHINGTON, D.C. – A trip to the NCAA Quarterfinals is on the line on Sunday, as the No. 4 seed Duke Blue Devils (16-3-2) and the No. 1 seed Georgetown Hoyas (19-0-3) meet for the second time this season in Washington, D.C.
Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. ET from Shaw Field and will be broadcast by Georgetown at www.GUHoyas.com. These two sides met earlier this year in August, playing to a scoreless draw in a top 15 showdown in the nation's capital. Brooke Heinsohn was the star of the show, recording a career-high 10 saves in the shutout effort.
The Blue Devils punched their ticket to the NCAA Round of 16 after a dominating 3-0 victory against Lipscomb Friday at the George Washington-Mt. Vernon Athletic Complex. Duke controlled the game from the opening whistle and opened the scoring in the 34th minute, as Taylor Racioppi found Tess Boade inside the 6' box, where the sophomore put away her third goal of the year for the 1-0 lead.
Kayla McCoy would add the next goal at the 62:16 mark to make it 2-0 and Gabi Brummett put it on ice with her first-career goal with three and a half minutes left in the match. The win advanced Duke to its eighth-straight Round of 16 appearance and 12th in program history.
McCoy, an All-ACC First Team selection, leads Duke with her 12 scores and 31 points, which stands tied for first and second in the ACC, respectively. Ella Stevens tops the team with 11 assists on the year. That total is tied for second in the conference and is top 10 nationally. Heinsohn recorded her 10th solo clean sheet of the season on Friday, tying her for first in the conference in clean sheets and tying her for fourth on Duke's single-season shutout list.
If the Blue Devils are victorious on Sunday, they will face the winner of No. 2 Baylor and No. 3 Virginia in the NCAA Quarterfinals. That match will be played either Friday, Nov. 23 or Saturday, Nov. 24 at a time to be determined. The winner of Baylor and Virginia will host the NCAA Quarterfinal match.

Rematch in the Nation's Capital…
Sunday's contest will be a rematch of a top 15 showdown in D.C. between the Blue Devils and the Hoyas. The two sides played to a scoreless draw, as Brooke Heinsohn led the Blue Devils with a career-high 10 saves. That was the first meeting between the two teams in program history. The Duke-Georgetown matchup is one of five NCAA Round of 16 contests that are rematches from 2018 regular season meetings.
Another Year in the Big Dance…
With their selection, the Blue Devils have reached the NCAA Tournament for the 24th time in program history and the 15th time in the last 16 seasons. Duke received a No. 4 national seed in Georgetown's region, giving the Blue Devils a national seed for the fourth-straight year and ninth time in program history. After Friday's win against Lipscomb, Duke is 26-7-2 when receiving a national seed and has made three College Cup appearances and three quarterfinals in six of those nine years.
Blue Devils Have Sights Set on Quarterfinals…
The Blue Devils have been no stranger to the quarterfinals lately in NCAA Tournament play. They have made nine showings in the NCAA Quarterfinals in program history, including their last six appearances in the NCAA Tournament. This year also marks the first time since the 2015 season that Duke will play on the road in the NCAA Second/Third Rounds. That year, the Blue Devils defeated Florida Gulf Coast and No. 2 Florida in Gainesville, Fla., to advance on to the NCAA Quarterfinals and eventually to the College Cup National Championship match.
Shining Bright in Postseason Play…
Several Blue Devils have seen tremendous success in the NCAA Tournament throughout their careers at Duke and that has placed them amongst the best in DWS history when it comes to performing on the sport's biggest stage. Kayla McCoy stands tied for second with 17 points, third with seven goals and tied for 10th with three assists. Ella Stevens is second in DWS history with seven assists, one behind the program record held by Mollie Pathman. She's also tied for sixth with 13 points and tied for 10th with three goals. Taylor Racioppi rounds out the group with five assists (T4th), 13 points (T6th) and four goals (T7th).
Brummett Tallies Career Goal No. 1...
With less than four minutes to go in Duke's 3-0 win against Lipscomb on Friday, sophomore Gabi Brummett put the game on ice with her first-career goal, finishing a pass from Marykate McGuire. With the score, Brummett is the eighth player in DWS history to record the first goal of their career in the NCAA Tournament, a list that includes current teammates Tess Boade (vs. Oklahoma State, 2017), Karlie Paschall (vs. Oklahoma State, 2017) and Mia Gyau (vs. Charlotte, 2016).
2018 Senior Class Continues to Dominate…
The 2018 Duke women's soccer senior class continues to do what it's done best for four years: win. Duke's victory against Rutgers moved the class' win total to 68. The squad is the winningest senior class in program history, while last year's class is second with 60 victories.
In their four years, the DWS seniors of Chelsea Burns, Kayla McCoy, Kat McDonald and Taylor Racioppi have made two trips to the NCAA College Cup, including a National Championship game appearance in 2015, and a trip to the NCAA Quarterfinals in 2016. The group of four also captured the 2017 ACC Regular Season Championship and has picked up at least one win against every ACC program.
McCoy Keeps the Good Times Rolling…
There was no doubt that senior Kayla McCoy would be the Blue Devils' offensive catalyst in 2018 and she hasn't disappointed, especially as Duke heads into postseason play. McCoy leads the team with 12 goals (T1st ACC) and 31 points (2nd ACC) while her seven assists are tied for fifth in the league. The Lincolnwood, Ill., native has tallied one four-point and three three-point contests this season and has at least one in all but five matches in 2018, tallying a point in 13 of the last 16 matches.
McCoy's play ramped up in conference action, as she tallied eight goals and two assists. Her eight scores led the league, with her 19 points standing second. She also topped the conference with 0.80 goals per game.
McCoy Continues Her Record Book Climb…
Senior Kayla McCoy has cracked a number of top 10 charts so far this season, including entering the top five in a number of records. She currently has 38 for her career, putting her fourth all-time and one shy of tying Laura Weinberg (2010-13) for third. Kelly Walbert (1992-95) owns the program record with 47-career scores.
McCoy's five game-winning goals this season has her career total now up to 15, putting her third on the DWS all-time list. She's two shy of Casey McCluskey (2001-04) for second place and five behind the record holder Kelly Walbert (1992-95), who has 20.
The Duke senior forward also stands fourth with 92 career points and tied for fifth with five career multi-goal performances.
Stevens Among the DWS Assists Elite...
With her team-high 11 dimes so far, Ella Stevens has cracked the top five on Duke's all-time assists list. She now has 28 for her career, which is fourth in DWS history. She is two from tying Mollie Pathman (2010-13) for third. Andi Melde (1994-97) holds the all-time record at Duke with 42.
Blue Devils One of the Nation's Top Assists Teams…
With 43 assists so far this year, the Blue Devils have become one of the nation's best when it comes to dropping dimes. Their 43 rank fourth in the ACC and top 25 in the country. Leading the way is Ella Stevens, who has 11 assists this season, which ties her career high set last season. Those 11 are tied for second in the conference and are top 10 in the NCAA.
Next Up…
If the Blue Devils are victorious on Sunday, they will face the winner of No. 2 Baylor and No. 3 Virginia in the NCAA Quarterfinals. That match will be played either Friday, Nov. 23 or Saturday, Nov. 24 at a time to be determined. The winner of Baylor and Virginia will host the NCAA Quarterfinal match.
