WASHINGTON, D.C. - An impressive 2018 season came to a close on Sunday in the NCAA Tournament Round of 16, as the No. 4 Duke Blue Devils (16-4-2) fell in a 4-1 decision to the No. 1 Georgetown Hoyas (20-0-3) at Shaw Field.
Duke closes out its 31st year of play with 16 wins, fifth most in program history. The Blue Devils put together eight wins in ACC play to earn a second-place finish in the conference, giving them a top three finish each of the last three seasons. Led by five All-ACC selections, the Blue Devils made their 24th NCAA Tournament in history and sixth-straight appearance in the Round of 16.
Georgetown earned the first score of the day, as the Hoyas sent a ball in from the left and finished to the top left corner of the goal to give them an early 1-0 lead. Duke nearly had an equalizer in the 32nd minute, as a long ball was played up to Kayla McCoy, only to have the GU keeper cut it off before the senior could make a play. Marykate McGuire got a chance in the final moments of the half, but her attempt was corralled by the keeper, sending the match into halftime with a 1-0 advantage for the home team.
The Blue Devils found the equalizer nine minutes into the start of the second half, as McCoy made some impressive moves to the top of the 18' and found Delaney Graham on the right side. The freshman would send the ball past the keeper and into goal for the first score of her career to make it a 1-1 contest.
With her score, Graham became the second Blue Devils this postseason (Gabi Brummett vs. Lipscomb) and the ninth in program history to record her first-career goal in NCAA Tournament play.
However, Georgetown would not take long to respond, scoring five minutes later to take a 2-1 lead. The Hoyas added on goals in the 72nd and 78th minutes to close out the game and bring Duke's season to a close.
Duke's group of four seniors closed out their Blue Devil careers as the winningest class in program history, racking up 68 total wins in their four years. Over their careers, McCoy, Taylor Racioppi, Chelsea Burns and Kat McDonald made two College Cups, one Quarterfinals appearance and a Round of 16 showing this season.
McCoy closed out her career standing fourth in Duke history in points (93) and goals (38) and finished third with 15 game-winning goals and tied for fifth with five multi-goal games. Racioppi also made her mark in the Duke record books, taking 221 shots to finish sixth in DWS history. The two also wrapped up their careers with impressive numbers in postseason play. McCoy finished standing second with 18-career NCAA points, third with seven goals and tied for seventh with four assists. Racioppi concluded her career tied for fourth with five assists, tied for six with 13 points and tied for seventh with four goals.
