BLACKSBURG, Va. – Despite a number of chances for both squads, Sunday's top 25 matchup at Thompson Field between the No. 10 Duke Blue Devils (6-1-4) and the 23
rd-ranked Virginia Tech Hokies (9-2-1) ended in a scoreless draw.
The Blue Devils held the advantage in both shots and corners, but were unable to break through for a goal throughout the 110 minutes of play. Duke closed out the contest with 14 shots—led by sophomore
Marykate McGuire's three attempts—and three corner kicks en route to the team's second consecutive scoreless draw, and fifth tie of the season.
The two teams entered the halftime break scoreless after a quiet first half of action. The Blue Devils created several opportunities throughout the first 45, including holding the advantage in possession. Duke also held the advantage in shots over Virginia Tech, 4-3, while neither team attempted a first-half corner kick.
The Blue Devils took little time to register their first shot of the afternoon, which came from junior
Tess Boade. The Highlands Ranch, Colo., native worked the right side of the final third before firing off the first shot of the contest with an attempt that sailed wide right of the goal post.
Boade closed out the first half with two attempts, combining with the duo of freshman
Emmy Duerr and McGuire, who recorded one shot apiece, to comprise Duke's four shots in the first period.
The second half featured seven combined shots once again, with Virginia Tech holding the one-shot advantage in the second period, 4-3, but neither team was able to connect on a goal as the top-25 matchup headed into overtime.
The Blue Devils closed out the overtime periods with seven shots, including five attempts in the second overtime, while the Hokies recorded five attempts across the two periods of overtime.
Duke goalkeeper
Brooke Heinsohn collected her fourth shutout of the season, including the team's seventh overall. The redshirt junior closed out the contest with four saves.
The Blue Devils return home this week to host a pair of top 25 opponents to Koskinen Stadium. First, Duke will host third-ranked rival North Carolina Thursday evening, Oct. 10, for a 7 p.m. matchup, airing live on ACC Network. The Blue Devils will close out the weekend against eighth-ranked Clemson Sunday afternoon, Oct. 13, in a 1 p.m. contest.
