Duke Sweeps Home Opener, Beats Bloomsburg, The Citadel & Presbyterian

DURHAM – The Duke wrestling program (6-4, 0-0 ACC) swept its season opening home series, defeating Bloomsburg, The Citadel and Presbyterian on Sunday at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

With the three wins, the Blue Devils are off to their best start since the 2014-15 season, matching that season at 6-4.

The morning began with a convincing 29-9 victory over Bloomsburg (3-2, 0-0 MAC) that came thanks to a quick start. The Blue Devils took the first four matches, with redshirt senior Kaden Russell earning a fall at 0:49 to headline a 16-0 lead.

While the Huskies got on the board, the Blue Devils got a boost from the three Colorado natives., as redshirt seniors Josh Finesilver and Matt Finesilver took home victories, while redshirt junior Gabe Dinette won his first dual match as a Blue Devil.

Russell earned another huge victory in the second dual against The Citadel (2-2, 0-0 SoCon), winning via technical fall and jumpstarting the Blue Devils once again. Sophomore Logan Agin made some history in the fourth match of the day, winning by fall at 0:19. Agin's fall was the seventh fastest in Blue Devils history, and fastest since Jack Anderson's school record in 2009.

The Finesilver's and Dinette helped secured the win once again, with Josh tacking on a win by fall, while his brother Matt won by major decision to secure a 30-10 win over the Bulldogs.

The Blue Devils faced some early adversity after Presbyterian (1-2, 0-0 SoCon) took the first match in a decision. However, Russell capped off his stellar day with another win by technical fall to give Duke a 5-3 lead. With the win, Russell is now 11-6, with four straight victories by technical fall or fall.

Not to be outdone, the Finesilver's finished off unbeaten days, as the Blue Devils took home a 30-7 victory. Matt is now 17-0, while Josh checks in at 16-1, as both maintain their holds on top-10 national rankings.

The Blue Devils will be back in action on Jan. 1, opening a two-day stint at the Southern Scuffle, in Chattanooga, Tenn., before returning to Durham on Jan. 13 against Appalachian State.
