DURHAM, N.C. – Along with the 12 returning letterwinners from last season, the Duke softball program also welcomed 10 newcomers in six freshman and four transfers. During the fall, GoDuke.com will be spotlighting each of the 10 newcomers ahead of the 2026 campaign.
The first Blue Devil spotlight is freshman outfielder Adelyn Matthews. A native of Tallahassee, Fla., Matthews attended Lawton Chiles High School where she was a four-year letterwinner and four-time First Team All-Big Bend selection. Off the field, Matthews was also a member of the National Honor Society.
GoDuke.com: What are you most excited about this season?
Adelyn Matthews: I am most excited to meet my best friends on the team, along with competing with the other girls at a high level.
GD: What is your favorite part about softball?
AM: My favorite part about softball is the sense of belonging it brings to me and the competitive nature that forces me to get better every day.
GD: What do you like most about Duke so far?
AM: As a newcomer at Duke, it's such an honor to play with a program that has such good history and competitiveness.
GD: What are some of your favorite hobbies outside of softball?
AM: Some of my hobbies outside of softball are pickleball, reading and listening to music.
GD: What makes Duke different from where you grew up?
AM: Duke is different from where I grew up because Duke already feels like a home to me with its welcoming nature and emphasis on academics.
