DURHAM, N.C. – Along with the 12 returning letterwinners from last season, the Duke softball program also welcomed 10 newcomers in six freshman and four transfers. During the fall, GoDuke.com will be spotlighting each of the 10 newcomers ahead of the 2026 campaign.
The next Blue Devil spotlight is sophomore transfer
Layla Lamar. Lamar returned home after playing her freshman year at Florida, making 16 appearances for the Gators in 2025. The Cary, N.C., native earned three starts and hit .235 in 17 plate appearances with four runs batted in. As a rookie, Lamar went 2-for-3 with two RBI, two runs and a stolen base in her first career start against Binghamton on Feb. 15. She also drove in the final two runs to help Florida secure the 9-1 victory over Arizona State in the Sun Devil Classic on Feb. 21. She is also coming off an explosive summer league season with the Bradenton Slice and was named the Florida Gulf Coast League Offensive Player of the Year.
GoDuke.com: What are you most excited about this season?
Layla Lamar: I'm most excited for this season because I'm ready to compete with the group of girls that we have here on the field. Everyone is so talented and shows up with a great attitude and ready to work every single day at practice. I'm just excited to watch it all pay off.
GD: What is it like getting to play for your mom and this program?
LL: I'm so excited to play for my mom here at Duke. From watching her build this program when I was little to being by her side and now being able to contribute to the program and have success together is something one can only dream of. I'm excited to make history together.
GD: What is your favorite part about softball?
LL: My favorite part about softball is building relationships with the girls around me and then going out on the field to compete, win games, have so much fun and energy and know that everything is paying off. It's great to know that all of the hard things you're doing together are coming together for the greater good.
GD: What are some of your favorite hobbies outside of softball?
LL: Outside of softball, I like to go shopping, play with my dog Bella, going for walks and lifting in the gym.
