DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke men's basketball team began preseason action with a scrimmage against Belmont on Thursday. The Blue Devils moved past the visiting Bruins, 102-62, as five different Duke players scored in double-figures.
Sophomore
Dame Sarr and freshman
Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje led the way with 19 points each, while Boumtje Boumtje was joined by
Patrick Ngongba II with a team-high seven rebounds apiece. Sarr and
Sebastian Wilkins were close behind on the glass, reeling in six caroms each and Ngongba II led the team in assists with four dimes.
John Blackwell tallied 15 points, including a perfect 5-for-5 night at the charity stripe.
Cayden Boozer scored 12 points and
Deron Rippey Jr. rounded out the double-digit scoring with 11 points.
The Blue Devils shot 23-of-27 overall from the free-throw line, highlighted by Sarr's 9-of-10 night from the stripe.
On defense, Duke limited Belmont to just 20-of-58 (.345) shooting and forced 17 turnovers, fueled by eight different Blue Devils registering at least one steal.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Duke opened the scoring with two free throws from John Blackwell and Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje, followed up with the Blue Devils' first field goal off an offensive rebound.
- Dame Sarr and Boumtje Boumtje drilled Duke's first three-pointers of the night, pushing the Blue Devils in front, 10-7, at the 17:32 mark.
- The lead grew to double-digits, 22-12, after the second triple of the night from Boumtje Boumtje gave the freshman 10 points. Duke's defense held Belmont to a scoring drought of over four minutes and took its largest lead of the night, 24-12, with nine minutes remaining before halftime.
- An offensive rebound led to a three-point play by Sarr, pushing the sophomore's point total to 14 with 6:33 on the clock. A fast-break slam by Cameron Williams, the freshman's first points of the night, increased the margin to 17, 33-16, and capped a nine-point scoring burst by the Blue Devils.
- The first half ended with a layup by Boumtje Boumtje, followed by a steal and three-pointer from Blackwell, sending the two teams into the break with Duke leading, 49-25.
- Patrick Ngongba II made a shot from deep four minutes into the second half, expanding the lead back to 24. Five quick points courtesy of Cayden Boozer, starting with a deep ball and followed by an immediate steal and slam, forced a Belmont timeout at the 13:27 mark.
- Duke remained in control, 69-43, as the second half reaching its midway point. The Blue Devils scored 13 of the next 17 points over the next five minutes to seize a 35-point advantage, 82-47.
- Duke's offense made 11 of its final 13 shots, helping the home team eclipse 100 points, capped by a Bryson Howard trifecta in the final seconds pushed the final margin to 40 points, 102-62.
