ANWA Runs End Thursday for Malixi & Smith

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Duke women's golf tandem of Rianne Malixi and Andie Smith had their runs end Thursday afternoon at the Augusta National Women's Amateur (ANWA) as both missed the top-30 cut to advance to Saturday's final round.
Malixi and Smith will still play a practice round Friday at Augusta National Golf Club and walk the grounds Saturday for the final round of the ANWA.
Malixi, seeing action in her second ANWA, totaled rounds of 73 and 71 for an even-par, 144, and missed the cut by one stroke. In round one, Malixi struck the ball really well, but couldn't get any putts to drop as she shot a 73. She parred the first seven holes Thursday morning and then suffered a bogey on No. 17. Malixi came on strong down the stretch as she 2-putted for birdie on No. 3, stuck her approach for birdie to inches on No. 5 and rolled in another birdie on No. 8 to move to 1-under-par for the tournament.
Heading into No. 9 inside the cutline, Malixi was off the green in two, but her chip on to the green left her with a sizeable putt and she 3-putted to fall to a 1-under, 71, and missed the cut.
Smith turned in rounds of 74 and 72, but missed the cut by three strokes with a 146. She opened the tournament with the first birdie of the event as she stuck it close on the par-4 10th hole on Wednesday morning. Smith was 1-under through six holes, but then bogeyed No. 16 and No. 18. She went back to even with a birdie on No. 2, but bogeyed No. 3 and No. 7 on the way in to finish with a 74.
In Thursday's final round, Smith once again birdied her opening hole, but bogeyed No. 2. After six pars in a row, she birdied No. 9 to get back to 1-under for the day. Smith suffered a bogey on No. 11, but birdied the par-5 No. 14. Needing to make up a couple more strokes on the way in, Smith had a double-bogey on No. 17, but closed with a birdie on No. 18 to finish her second appearance in the ANWA.
Following the weekend in Augusta, the duo will return to Durham to prepare for the ACC Championship April 16-19 at Porters Neck Country Club in Wilmington, North Carolina.
