Eget Named Duke Starting Quarterback

DURHAM, N.C. – Duke head coach Manny Diaz announced Walker Eget as the Blue Devils' starting quarterback to open the 2026 season.
A native of Santa Clarita, California, Eget joined the Blue Devils in February as a transfer after being a five-year member of the football program at San Jose State (2021-22-23-24-25). He played in 27 career games with 18 starts and earned 2025 Honorable Mention All-Mountain West accolades. He has completed 421-of-730 (.577) passes for 5,563 yards with 30 touchdowns. In addition, he has rushed 64 times for 181 yards (2.83) to compile 5,744 yards of total offense.

Other members of the quarterback group include second-year program member Dan Mahan, who did not experience game action last fall, and true freshman Terry Walker III in addition to transfers Blaine Hipa and Ari Patu.Â
"It was a good decision because it was a hard decision," Diaz said. "We're really pleased at how both quarterbacks developed. I think Dan has made really massive strides with all the reps he got in spring when Walker was limited and through the competition we had in training camp. I think the team believes we can win with both guys. Both guys have a different set of skill sets that we could frame our offense around. But when it all came down to it, it was just about consistency, which is normally what you expect from an older guy - keeping the same level day after day."
Duke's season opener is slated for Saturday, September 5 when it welcomes Tulane to Brooks Field at Wallace Wade Stadium for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff on ACC Network.
