Duke Nets Two Goals in Final Eight Minutes to Down ODU, 2-1

NORFOLK, Va. – The second-ranked Duke women's soccer team scored two goals in the final 7:49 of the second half to defeat Old Dominion, 2-1, Thursday at ODU Soccer Stadium in Norfolk.

After falling behind, 1-0, in the second half, the Blue Devils received goals from Mia Minestrella at the 82:51 mark and Katie Shea Collins at 88:07 to come-from-behind for the victory. The game-winner was the fourth-latest goal scored by the Blue Devils since the 2022 season.

Duke moved to 4-0-1 on the season, while Old Dominion fell to 1-4-0.

How It Happened

The Blue Devils had their best chance early in the 14th minute as freshman Yuna Marui attempted a shot that went just wide of the right post.
In the 21st minute, freshman Natalie Chudowsky was fouled approximately 24 yards away and Duke was awarded a free kick. Redshirt junior Sam Courtwright stepped up and sent a shot off the right post. The ball went to the feet of sophomore Daya King, who's shot sailed over the crossbar.
With 29 seconds remaining, Courtwright had another free kick, but it was saved by ODU goalkeeper Emily Earles.
Duke held a 10-4 shot advantage in the first half with Courtwright pacing the Blue Devils with three attempts.
In the 56th minute, Chudowsky fired a left-footed shot that went wide.
Junior Katie Shea Collins had Duke's best opportunity of the evening as she stole the ball from an ODU defender and passed to senior Mia Minestrella. Collins, who hails from Gallatin, Tennessee, then sprinted up the field and Minestrella found the streaking forward. Collins took the ball, split two Monarch defenders and missed the goal at the 61:13 mark.
Old Dominion struck first in the 68th minute as the Monarchs got behind the Duke defense and Riley Mullen finished the attempt.
Duke started to create better chances and senior Mia Oliaro blasted an attempt in the 72nd minute, but Earles was able to leap and get a hand on the shot for the save.
Finally at the 82:51 mark, Duke got on the board to even the score, 1-1. Senior Phoebe Goldthwaite took the ball on the right side of the box and fed sophomore Avery Oder, who then drove toward the endline. Oder, who hails from Calabasas, California, passed the ball back in front of the goal where Minestrella was able to get a foot on it and the ball trickled into the far right of the net.
With less than two minutes remaining, sophomore goalkeeper Molly Vapensky took the ball in the box and threw a long pass to Goldthwaite. A product of Durham, North Carolina, Goldthwaite drove up the middle of the pitch and found Collins, who beat the ODU defender and slotted in her 12th career game-winning goal into the far-left corner of the goal to give Duke a 2-1 lead with 1:53 remaining.

Notes

Mia Minestrella scored her 37th career goal and has now scored a goal in eight of the last 10 games.
Minestrella has registered 88 career points to move into fifth all-time on Duke's career charts.
Katie Shea Collins posted her fourth goal of the season and second game-winner. She has collected 27 career goals and 12 game-winning tallies over her career.
Goalkeeper Molly Vapensky totaled her first career assist on the game-winning goal.
Senior Phoebe Goldthwaite assisted on both of Duke's goals.
Duke was held without a goal in the first half for the first time this season.
The Blue Devils fell behind, 1-0, in the second half, marking the first time this year Duke has trailed in a match.
