Christine Halfpenny enters her third year with the Duke Women’s Lacrosse program. She works primarily with the goalies, as well as overseeing the team’s fitness regime. She also serves as the primary recruiting director and the program director of the Duke Winter Lacrosse Camp.
Under Halfpenny’s direction Duke finished among the top team’s in the country in scoring defense at 7.81 goals per game, the eighth best mark overall. She guided Megan Huether to a first team All-America selection as well as IWLCA/US Lacrosse Goalie of the Year honors.
Halfpenny began her collegiate coaching career as an assistant coach at Brown University in 2001. She coached at Brown for two seasons before returning to her alma mater, Virginia Tech, to serve as an assistant coach in 2003. Her responsibilities at Brown and Virginia Tech included recruiting, scouting, travel coordinating and assisting with practice planning. In addition, her on-field coaching duties focused primarily on the attack.
Prior to coaching at Brown, Halfpenny worked at Cave Spring High School in Roanoke, Va. There she served as the assistant varsity tennis coach in 1999 and the head varsity swim coach from 1999-2000, leading the boy’s team to the AAA state championship. Halfpenny was also a substitute teacher at Cave Spring.
Halfpenny has coached at numerous lacrosse camps across the country and served as assistant director of the No Boundaries Lax Camp in 2003 as well as at the Brown Lacrosse Camp in 2001 and 2002. She has also performed volunteer work with the Special Olympics and American Cancer Society.
A native of Latham, N.Y., Halfpenny graduated from Virginia Tech in 1999 with a degree in health and physical education. Halfpenny, a four-year letterwinner in lacrosse, was a starter on the squad that won the Atlantic-10 Championship in 1999. In addition, she received the Coach’s Award her senior year and was on the Athletic Directors Honor Roll in 1998 and 1999.
Halfpenny resides in Raleigh with her husband, Matt, who is an assistant men’s tennis coach at N.C. State. Matt and Christine had their first child, Jackson, on December 7, 2005.
