DUKE VS. VIRGINIA
Duke holds a 6-5-4 overall record against Virginia. In the last meeting,
Virginia defeated Duke 4-3 in Charlottesville on October 21, 2000.
A LOOK AT VIRGINIA
Virginia enters the game as the No. 4 seed. The Cavaliers improved their
overall record to 10-7 with a 1-0 victory over Florida State this past
Saturday. Alyssa Benitez scored the game-winner in the 88th minute.
A LOOK BACK
Duke dropped their sixth game of the season on senior night on Saturday when
Vanderbilt upset the Blue Devils 2-0 at Koskinen Stadium.
IN THE POLLS
Duke, the No. 5 seed, is currently ranked No. 24 in the SoccerTimes.com Top
25 poll while Virginia is ranked No. 19.
INTO THE RECORD BOOKS
Senior Susan Kraeger moved into seventh place for career assists (13), while
senior Kim Daws ranks eighth in career assists (12), 10th in career shots
(130), and 13th in career games played (80). Senior Isis Dallis ranks second
in career saves (243) and shutouts (14.5).
ONE COACH, ONE TEAM
Head coach Bill Hempen has been at the helm of the Blue Devils since he took
control of the program 13 years ago. Hempen, the only head coach of Duke
Women's soccer, has posted a 160-98-15 (.614) overall record.
EARLY EXIT
Freshman Gwendolyn Oxenham was captain and MVP of the No. 1 girl's soccer
team in the nation a year ago. The 16-year old also finished high school in
three years.
GAME-WINNERS
Junior Sarah Pickens has scored four game-winning goals this season: at
Catawba on Aug. 26, at Richmond on Sept. 3, vs. Clemson on Oct. 7, and vs.
Old Dominion on Oct. 13.
A YEAR AGO
Duke lost in the first round of the ACC Tournament in 1999 when Maryland
defeated the Blue Devils 2-1.
NATIONAL TEAM
FreshmanThora Helgadottir was in goal in April during a draw between the
Iclandic National Team and the United States National Team.
NCAA TOURNAMENT
Duke is trying to make their ninth NCAA Tournament appearance in 13 seasons.
The Blue Devils lost in the second round in 1999 as they were defeated by
William & Mary 3-0.
FAMILY TRADITION
Junior Katie Heaps is keeping the family tradition alive. Her older brother
Jay, played basketball and was an All-America soccer player for the Blue
Devils from 1995-98. He is now a member of the Miami Fusion in the MLS.
PICKENS NAMED FIRST-TEAM ALL ACC
Junior Sarah Pickens was named first team All-Conference by the ACC on
Wednesday. The native of Greensboro, N.C., leads the team with nine goals
and two assists for 20 points.
MORE ACC HONORS
Senior Kim Daws, sophomore Carly Fuller, and freshman Gwendolyn Oxenham were
named second team All-ACC. Freshman Thora Helgadottir and Oxenham were named
to the 2000 All-Freshmen team
