Duke freshman midfielder Casey McCluskey earned 2001 Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Year honors and was named to the All-ACC first team and the All-Freshmen Team at the conference's annual tournament banquet Wednesday evening. Sophomore goalkeeper Thora Helgadottir joined McCluskey on the All-ACC first team, while junior midfielder Carly Fuller recieved second team honors.
McCluskey was the top offensive threat for the Blue Devils in 2001, finishing the regular season tied for fourth in the conference in goals (9) and second among freshmen. The Fairfax, Va., native posted three two-goal games and is currently tied for seventh all-time at Duke for goals in a season.
Helgadottir has been instrumental in the Blue Devils' turn around this season, posting shut outs in each of their last three contests. The Kopavogur, Iceland, native, who led the ACC in saves per game in the regular season (5.15) has a .60 goals against average in her last five games.
Fuller has played well all season long, creating most of the Blue Devils scoring opportunites. The Portland, Ore., native has been on fire as of late, scoring game-winners in two of Duke's last three matches.
The Blue Devils will battle eighth-ranked Virginia in the first round of the ACC Tournament on Thursday at 2:30 p.m at Dennie Spry Stadium.
