DURHAM, N.C. (AP) - Alana Beard's offensive game was outstanding, but her defense is what counts most with Duke coach Gail Goestenkors.
"Alana's defense really sets the tone for us," Goestenkors said after the eighth-ranked Blue Devils beat UNC-Greensboro 90-58 Sunday night.
Beard came within a couple of plays of a triple-double, getting eight rebounds and nine assists to go with 21 points. But it was her seven steals Goestenkors couldn't stop talking about.
"She puts such great pressure on the ball and plays with such passion," the coach said. "Many times, that's contagious for us. She came out focused."
Beard scored 10 points in the first 5:39 and had 14 by halftime as Duke rolled to a 41-33 lead by the break.
"This was a good game for us because they wouldn't go away, especially in the first half," Goestenkors said. "They made us play harder in the second half, which is what we really needed to do."
Duke opened the second half with 11 straight points for a 52-33 lead before the Spartans came back with a 7-0 run of their own.
"We tried hard not to look at the scoreboard," UNCG coach Lynne Agee said. "We did some things very well, and we didn't back down."
The Spartans went without a field goal for a span of 5:23 in the second half, allowing Duke to run off 18 consecutive points. Beard capped the run with a layup that gave Duke a 76-43 lead.
"That stretch killed us," Agee said. "They got hot against our zone and hit some big 3s, and that effectively was the end of the game on the scoreboard."
Sheana Mosch added 16 points, Iciss Tillis 15 and Wynter Whitley 14 for Duke (8-2) as every Blue Devil scored. Brianne Dodgen led UNC-Greensboro (4-4) with 15 points, and Jacina Lambert had 12.
The victory made Goestenkors the winningest coach in the program's history with a record of 214-80 in 10 years at Duke. That betters the wins of Debbie Leonard, who went 213-189 in 15 seasons in Durham.
Goestenkors credited the Blue Devils' defense for win No. 214.
Duke held the Spartans to 18-for-56 shooting (32.1 percent) from the floor. The Blue Devils hit more than half their shots for the fourth straight game, making 32-of-57 (56.1 percent. Duke was down to eight scholarship players after the transfers last week of Rometra Craig and Crystal White.
"I don't think fatigue was a factor for us," Goestenkors said. "Our players like the fact they can go hard for four minutes, get a rest and then rotate right back in. We're in excellent physical shape, so I don't think fatigue is hurting us."
