TALLAHASSEE, FLA - Sophomore Lauren Simel scored the only goal of the match in the first half and junior goalkeeper Thora Helgadottir made seven saves to help 24th-ranked Duke get revenge on 18th-ranked Virginia from an earlier loss this season. The Blue Devils defeated Virginia 1-0 in the second game of the ACC Tournament.
Freshman midfielder Heidi Hollenbeck's crossed to Simel in the 26th minute. Simel took the pass and shot into the lower right corner to give Duke the 1-0 lead they wouldn't relinquish.
Virginia had several chances to tie the game, but were unable to get the ball past Helgadottir.
Like the first match, Virginia outshot the Blue Devils 20-6, but unlike the first match, Duke took advantage of one of their shots to come away with the win. In both matches, the Cavaliers held the Blue Devils to a season-low six shots.
With the win over Virginia, the Blue Devils won their third consecutive match and improved to 9-8-2 overall. Even if the Blue Devils lose their next match, they will still be over the .500 mark, which makes them eligble for the NCAA Tournament that begins on Nov. 15. NCAA Tournament selections will be made Sunday night
Duke advances to the ACC semifinals against 12th-ranked and second-seeded Clemson Friday at 5:00 p.m. All matches are played at the Seminole Soccer Complex on the Florida State campus. Clemson defeated N.C. State 1-0 in the quarterfinals of the first game at the ACC Tournament.
