Duke's Alana Beard and La'Tangela Atkinson of North Carolina earned this week's Atlantic Coast Conference's Player and Rookie of the Week honors, respectively.
Junior guard Alana Beard averaged 23.3 points, 5.7 rebounds, four assists and six steals in leading the Blue Devils to victories over Charleston Southern, Florida International and Tulsa. The Shreveport, La., native also hit 62.5 percent of her field goals, 37.5 percent from 3-point land and 77.8 from the free throw line. Beard's best performance of the week came against Tulsa where she recorded a game-high 25 points, 10 rebounds and seven steals in just 25 minutes of play.
Bishopville, S.C., native La'Tangela Atkinson registered double-doubles in both of UNC's wins last week, averaging 14 points and 11.5 rebounds. She was the Tar Heel's top scorer with 16 points and 12 rebounds in a home-court win over Elon on Dec. 17. Three days later, she led the team with 11 rebounds and added 12 points as UNC beat 18th-ranked and previously-undefeated South Carolina in Myrtle Beach. Atkinson is the Tar Heels' leading rebounder with 8.2 per game and ranks a close second on the team in scoring with 12.7 points per game. She has also tallied four double-doubles this season.
