Duke Hits The Road For ACC Match at Clemson on Friday...
The ninth-ranked Duke women's soccer team will hit the road on Friday for a key Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) match at 7:00 p.m. at Historic Riggs Field in Clemson, S.C.
Both teams are coming off big victories as the Blue Devils knocked off fourth-ranked Virginia, 3-1, on Saturday and Clemson defeated 14th-ranked Wake Forest, 3-1, on Tuesday. Duke enters the match with a 10-4-1 overall and 3-2 league mark, while Clemson is 8-5-2, 2-3.
In The Rankings...
Duke is ranked 12th in the Soccerbuzz.com, ninth in Soccer America, 11th in NSCAA and 11th in the SoccerTimes.com polls. Clemson is not ranked.
The Series...
Clemson leads the overall series, 6-5. The Tigers have defeated the Blue Devils the past four straight contests and the last win by Duke at Clemson was in 1997 (3-0).
Inside Clemson...
Clemson broke a three-match losing streak on Tuesday with a 3-1 victory over 14th-ranked Wake Forest. Prior to that match, the Tigers had been outscored 9-2 in the past three matches. Freshman Courtney Foster leads Clemson with eight goals on the year.
McCluskey Earns Team Of The Week Accolades...
Junior Casey McCluskey was honored this week after her excellent play against N.C. State and Virginia. McCluskey was named to the Soccer America Team of the Week, after registering an assist in both contests.
A Look Back At Last Year...
Last season, Clemson defeated Duke 2-0 in the semifinals of the ACC Tournament and 3-2 in double-overtime at Duke. In the overtime loss, then-freshmen Carolyn Riggs and Carmen Bognanno each collected goals to give Duke an early 2-0 lead, but the Tigers scored three unanswered goals for the victory.
Marshall Leads Duke to Victory...
Sophomore Shelly Marshall scored her second goal of the season and third of her two-year career on Saturday to lead Duke to a 1-0 victory over Virginia. She chipped in a 15-yard goal in the 33:39 mark of the first half, off assists from Casey McCluskey and Carmen Bognanno.
A Winning Affair...
Duke now owns 10 victories on the season, which is a new season-high for Head Coach Robbie Church at Duke. In the two previous seasons, he led Duke to eight victories in 2001 and nine victories in 2002.
Helgadottir Named ACC Co-Player of the Week...
Duke University senior goalkeeper Thora Helgadottir was named ACC Co-Player of the Week on Monday after leading the 12th-ranked Blue Devil women's soccer team to two victories over N.C. State and fourth-ranked Virginia last week. Also receiving the honor this week was North Carolina's Alyssa Ramsey.
Helgadottir, a native of Kopavogur, Iceland, allowed no goals through 165.13 minutes of action in the net for the Blue Devils against the Wolfpack and Cavaliers. In Duke's 3-1 victory over N.C. State, Helgadottir played in 75.13 minutes without allowing a goal, while registering three saves.
In the 1-0 upset victory over Virginia, Helgadottir collected her second shutout of the season as she recorded two saves on four shots faced. One of the saves came at the end of the first half as she stopped Virginia's Ariel Thompson, who had a one-on-one breakaway against Helgadottir.
The shutout against the Cavaliers marks the 15th of her career and she now ranks second on Duke's all-time shutout list behind Melissa Carr (34). Over 10 starts this season, Helgadottir has a 1.28 goals against average.
It marks the second time this season a Duke women's soccer player has been named ACC Player of the Week as sophomore Carolyn Riggs earned the honor on Sept. 1.
Bognanno Nets Game-Winner...
Sophomore Carmen Bognanno registered her second game-winning goal of the season against Wake Forest to lead Duke to a 1-0 victory over ninth-ranked Wake Forest. Bognanno collected the goal just 35 seconds into the match. For her efforts, she was named to the Soccer America Team of the Week.
High Scoring...
Through the first 15 contests in the 2003 season, Duke has scored 35 goals. Last season, the Blue Devils scored a total of 37 goals in 20 games played.
In the NCAA Stats...
Through games of Sunday, Duke ranked 35th in the nation in goals per game (2.33).
The 200th Victory...
Head Coach Robbie Church picked up his 200th career victory on Sept. 26 as the Blue Devils shutout Davidson, 7-0. Church is in his 18th season as a head coach of collegiate men's and women's soccer and now owns a 203-128-17 record.
A Young Crowd...
Third-year head coach Robbie Church owns a roster with 16 of 22 players listed as freshmen or sophomores. The youth has served the Blue Devils well as the freshmen and sophomores own 30 of Duke's 35 goals scored.
Sophomore Carolyn Riggs leads the Blue Devils with seven goals.
Against Ranked Opponents...
So far this season, Duke is 4-3-1 against ranked teams. The Blue Devils knocked off fourth-ranked Texas on Aug. 31 by a 3-2 ledger, ninth-ranked Wake Forest (1-0) and fourth-ranked Virginia (1-0), most recently.

So far on the season, Duke has 11 different players who have scored goals and eight different players who have registered game-winning goals. The Blue Devils also have 14 different players who have collected one or more assists.
Offensive...
Through 15 contests, Duke has outshot its opponents by a 226-123 clip and outscored teams 35-17. The Blue Devils have shutout their opponents on six different occasions.
