CLEMSON, S.C. - It was a game of missed opportunities for the ninth-ranked Duke women's soccer team on Friday evening in Clemson, S.C. as the Blue Devils fell 1-0 to Clemson at Riggs Field. Duke falls to 10-5-1, 3-3 in ACC action, while Clemson improves to 9-5-2, 3-3 ACC.
"Clemson came out and pressured us early in the first 10 minutes and took us out of our play," said Duke Head Coach Robbie Church. "I am really proud of my team because after the first 10 minutes we got a hold of the game. We battled and scrapped up until the very end, but we just have to be able to play more of our game."
Clemson got on the board early in the first eight minutes of the contest as freshman Courtney Foster collected her ninth goal of the season off assists from Amanda Garcia and Allison Graham. Overall, Duke outshot Clemson in the first stanza, 5-3, but coudn't capitalize on its opportunities.
The Blue Devils had three scoring chances in a span of five minutes towards the end of the first half. Senior Gwendolyn Oxenham, sophomore Kate Seibert and freshman Lauren Tippets each had shots. Seibert's header at the 35:30, off a direct kick from sophomore Carolyn Ford, sailed just high over the crossbar for Duke's best chance at a goal.
Duke dominated play in the second half and had numerous scoring opportunities, especially in the final 15 minutes of action, but nothing would fall for the Blue Devils on the night. Seibert finished the game with three shots, all of which were excellent scoring chances, but nothing seemed to fall for the Downingtown, Pa., product.
In the closing minutes of the match, Duke had two corner kicks by freshman Darby Kroyer and a shot by Ford with three seconds remaining went high over the crossbar, which told the story for the Blue Devils on the evening.
For the game, Duke outshot Clemson 12-10 and had a 7-1 corner kick advantage. The shutout loss for the Blue Devils is the third out of six in ACC contests and it marks the fifth straight loss for Duke against Clemson.
Duke will next host Gardner-Webb on Monday at 7:00 p.m. in Koskinen Stadium and then will close out the regular season on Friday, Oct. 31 at 7:00 p.m. against Maryland.
