Duke To Face North Carolina In ACC Semifinals On Friday...![]()

After defeating fifth-seeded Virginia, 2-1, on Wednesday in the first round of the ACC Championship, the fourth-seeded and 10th-ranked Duke Blue Devils (13-5-1) will next face top-ranked and top-seeded North Carolina (19-0) on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the semifinals. The match will be played at the SAS Soccer Complex in Cary, N.C.
The other semifinal match on Friday will be second-seeded Florida State vs. sixth-seeded Maryland at 5:00 p.m. The winner of the Duke/UNC contest will receive points toward the Carlyle Cup, a year-long competition between Duke and North Carolina sponsored by Carlyle & Company of Greensboro, N.C.
In The Rankings...
Duke is ranked 18th in the Soccerbuzz.com, 10th in Soccer America and 14th in the SoccerTimes.com polls. North Carolina is ranked No. 1 in all four major polls.
The Series...
North Carolina leads the overall series 24-1-1. Overall, Duke is 0-10 versus UNC in Durham, N.C., 1-10-1 vs. UNC in Chapel Hill, N.C. and 0-4 in neutral sites.
In The ACC Tournament...
Duke owns an all-time record of 9-15-2 in the ACC Tournament over the 16 years. The Blue Devils and Tar Heels have faced off eight times over the years in ACC Championship action with UNC owning a 8-0 record against Duke.
The Tar Heels have outscored Duke 33-5 in ACC Tournament play. It marks the fourth time Duke/UNC have met in the semifinals.
Overall, Duke has advanced to the semifinals of the ACC Tournament nine times and owns a 4-5 record in the semifinals. Last year, Duke lost to Clemson 2-0 in the semifinals.

Duke senior Gwendolyn Oxenham collected her second game-winning goal of the season on Wednesday as the Gulf Breeze, Fla., product headed in a goal off a Rebecca Moros cross. It marked the third goal of the season for Oxenham.
Blue Devil freshman Darby Kroyer connected on Duke's first goal of the match to even the score 1-1 early in the second half, off an assist from Carolyn Riggs. Senior Thora Helgadottir registered the victory in goal for Duke with four saves on the evening.
Inside North Carolina...
North Carolina owns a 19-0 overall mark and came back from being down 2-0 against N.C. State on Wednesday in the first round of the ACC Championship to defeat the Wolfpack 6-2.
ACC Player of the Year, Lindsay Tarpley, leads the Tar Heels with 19 goals and 12 assists on the season, while Alyssa Ramsey has a team-best 17 assists.
Last Meeting on Oct. 1 Versus North Carolina...
The top-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels registered four goals in the first 15 minutes of action and went on to defeat 10th-ranked Duke, 4-0, in the ACC opener for both teams on Oct. 1 at Koskinen Stadium in Durham, N.C.
Tar Heel sophomore Lindsay Tarpley collected a hat trick on the night scoring the first two goals and adding a fourth off a shot from 12 yards from Alyssa Ramsey and Heather O'Reilly. Kendall Fletcher tapped in the third goal of the night off a corner kick from Ramsey and O'Reilly.
After North Carolina went up 2-0, the Blue Devils had one of their best scoring opportunities of the contest at the 6:30 mark as sophomore Carmen Bognanno had a left-footed rocket from 20 yards, which was saved by UNC goalkeeper Aly Winget. Junior Casey McCluskey also had a point-blank shot with four minutes left in the match, but it just sailed over the crossbar.
North Carolina outshot the Blue Devils 17-10 for the game. Senior Thora Helgadottir collected five saves in goal for Duke, while Winget netted the victory and finished with six saves.
Duke Dominating Of Late...
Over the last six contests, Duke has outscored its opponents by a 12-3 ledger, which includes three shutouts. The Blue Devils have only allowed three or more goals at Florida State and against North Carolina in early October.
Ford Named To Soccerbuzz.com Team of the Week...
Carolyn Ford earned Soccerbuzz.com Team of the Week honors on Thursday as the sophomore led Duke's defense to two shutout victories last week, while recording two assists from the back. She had an assist on Kate Seibert's goal against Gardner-Webb as the Blue Devils won 5-0 in non-conference action. The Bethesda, Md., native also had the assist on the lone goal of the match to Darby Kroyer as the Blue Devils defeated 19th-ranked Maryland to finish with their best record in the league since 2000, with a 4-3 mark.
A Look Back At Last Year...
Last season, the unranked Blue Devils traveled to Chapel Hill, N.C. to battle the second-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels. The two squads posted their first tie in the overall series finishing 0-0 after two overtimes.
Then junior goalkeeper Thora Helgadottir finished the contest with nine saves on 20 North Carolina shots. With time winding down in regulation, Helgadottir made four outstanding saves in just over four minutes of play. In the 78th minute, North Carolina's Alyssa Ramsey attempted to score, but Helgadottir slid feet first toward the ball and kicked it away from the net. Seconds later, Tar Heel Anne Morrell attempted another shot, but again, Helgadottir kicked the ball away.
Then in the 81st minute, North Carolina's Anne Felts would have scored, but Helgadottir made a dive to left side of the net to knock the ball away. With only 7:52 left, Tar Heel Lindsay Tarpley attempted another goal, but the junior from Iceland leaped in to the air and tapped the ball in the air before catching it.
With the tie, Duke ended a 13 match losing streak against the Tar Heels.
The Seibert-Ford Connection...
So far on the season, Kate Seibert has scored six goals, which ranks tied second on the Duke squad. Of those six goals, sophomore defender Carolyn Ford has assisted on five of them.
Harris Returns...
Senior defender Kelly Harris has played in Duke's last two regular season contests after missing the first 16 matches with a leg injury. The Dallas, Texas, product started against Maryland for senior night for her first start of the season. A starter on the defensive end her first three years at Duke before being sidelined this season, Harris has played in 60 career games, while starting 50 of those contests.
Oxenham Moves Up Career Assist List...
With her assist against Gardner-Webb on Oct. 27, senior Gwendolyn Oxenham moved into tied for fifth on Duke's all-time assist list with 16. So far on the season, she leads the Blue Devils with eight assists. She needs two more to move into tied for fourth.
A Winning Affair...
Duke now owns 13 victories on the season, which is a new season-high for Head Coach Robbie Church at Duke. In the two previous seasons, he led Duke to eight victories in 2001 and nine victories in 2002.
Scoring Slump In ACC Play...
In seven ACC regular season contests, Duke scored just five goals and was shutout in three games, but finished with a 4-3 record. The Blue Devils have been outscored 8-5 in ACC contests.
High Scoring...
Through 19 contests in the 2003 season, Duke has scored 43 goals. Last season, the Blue Devils scored a total of 37 goals in 20 games played.
The 200th Victory...
Head Coach Robbie Church picked up his 200th career victory on Sept. 26 as the Blue Devils shutout Davidson, 7-0. Church is in his 18th season as a head coach of collegiate men's and women's soccer and now owns a 206-129-17 record.
