Duke Head Coach Gail Goestenkors
"We had a great week of practice this week. I was very, very pleased with our practice. They were focused, intense. I feel like we have gone to another level. I was hoping that today some of the things we have worked on would show. It was a tough game but I am proud. I felt like the kids for the most part kept their focus. They worked together and this game allowed us to work on some different things. I am overall pleased with the win. We have been playing at a higher level in practice, but I think this was a good game."
"There are some things that we have been working on in terms of offense that we have been really good with. We were able to go inside effectively today. When we see that you can go inside then you really need to do that rather than run through the sets we have been working on. We were able to recognize what was available."
"We have been working hard on the defensive end of the floor during practice. We feel like that was one thing we needed to improve on. We have played some tough opponents, but we feel like our defense hasn't been as strong. Mistie (Bass) and Iciss (Tillis) have really worked on their defense and they take more pride in their defense."
Sophomore Mistie Bass
"I have been working hard in practice. I have seen things a lot differently than I did beforehand. Before I think that I was posting up just to post up. Now I am posting up with reason. I am just taking advantage of what my teammates are giving me."
"I think that I am doing better this year than last year. That is always the goal-to get better every time you get out on the floor. This summer I worked on my quickness and losing weight. I worked on the total package just to be able to help my team out. I not only wanted to help them out with post defense but to get out on guards."
Senior Iciss Tillis
On her dunk attempt: "I knew the play that they ran and I went for the steal. The steal was so quick and when I was dribbling I didn't feel anything. I couldn't believe that I was doing it. I wasn't excited, I was just shocked. I didn't know if this was going to be the game I was going to attempt to dunk."
Tulsa Head Coach Kathy McConnell-Miller
"Considering the score was the exact same as it was last year, we're as good as we were last year and Duke is as good as they were last year. We thought we'd be a little bit better and obviously give them a little better game. Whether Duke was ranked No. 1, third or fourth, they're definitely one of the best teams in the country. We've had a tough week. We played Missouri last Saturday, Arkansas Tuesday and Duke Sunday, so in eight days we've played Big 12, SEC and ACC. My hope is that we've learned something from the challenging schedule over the last three games."
On Duke's Team This Season Compared To Last Year: "They're definitely bigger, stronger and faster. Unfortunately they don't have the depth due to injuries. Their younger players really need to be brought along and the minutes some of their older players are going to have to play may hurt them in the end. I hope it isn't the case. They have to play a lot of minutes. I looked down and they're up 50, I hope a coach goes to their bench but she didn't even have that opportunity. They're smarter with the ball and they know when to explode. Last year, they played at one speed and they played fast and this year, they picked their moments and knew when to attack and when not to, so they're definitely smarter and more experienced."
On Duke's Inside Game: "You're talking about Mistie Bass and Monique Currie and Iciss Tillis. They just have such an incredible supporting cast, every single one of them; there are no weak links. It just makes everybody's job easier when you have four other people on the floor that can score. They could've gone inside or outside and dominated, and they did."
On Alana Beard and Diana Taurasi: "It is a question in all general managers office whether the top pick (in the WNBA Draft) will be Taurasi or Beard. There's no question that whoever has the first pick, it's not necessarily that one is better than the other. You may meet the needs of that particular program."
Freshman Jillian Robbins
"In Mistie Bass, you have a banger and she'll take it to you like that. Then you have Iciss Tillis who's outside the three-point line. It's a hard group of post players to guard. We're young and will get better in our post defense, but this was an interesting game in terms of post players."
Junior Sarah Lundberg
"Their defense was so hard core throughout the whole game. We had a tough time getting shots off, period. The shots we did take were in desperation because of the shot clock. Every single one of them has some aspect of versatility. It's not like you can just play behind this girl, you have players like Alana Beard who can elevate and shoot, or dribble around you or put a spin-move on you."
