MADISON, WISC.-The fourth-ranked Duke women's tennis team advanced to the next round of the United States Tennis Association (USTA)/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Women's Team Indoor Championship on Thursday with a 6-1 victory over 34th-ranked Kentucky at the A.C. Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison, Wisc.
The Blue Devils jumped out to a 1-0 lead by taking the doubles point. At the number one position Duke's 13th-ranked duo of Kelly McCain/Hillary Adams downed 10th-ranked Sarah Witten/Nathalie Roels (8-2) and at the second slot 11th-ranked Julie DeRoo/Amanda Johnson of Duke defeated 17th-ranked Jill Buckley/Amy Trefethen (8-6). The Blue Devils also won the third position with an 8-7 victory by 49th-ranked Katie Granson/Julia Smith over Shannon Stafford/Bradwell.
In singles action, Duke's 81st-ranked Katie Blaszak gave Duke a 2-0 advantage by taking a 7-6, 6-2 victory at the fourth position by defeating Stafford. The Blue Devils then received got a 1-6, 7-5, 6-0 victory by Johnson, who is ranked 15th-nationally, as she downed 48th-ranked Nathalie Roels to put Duke up 3-0.
Kentucky cut the Duke advantage to 3-1 as Stough knocked off 43rd-ranked Saras Arasu (3-6, 6-2, 6-1). Second-ranked McCain then clinched the victory with a 6-1, 6-2 win over 37th-ranked Witten. The Blue Devils then received victories at No. 5 and No. 3 by 36th-ranked DeRoo and 98th-ranked Granson to give Duke a 6-1 victory.
Duke will next battle fifth-ranked North Carolina at 3:30 PM (CT) on Friday.
