Kimchi Advances to Finals at Battle in the Bay Classic

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The Duke women's tennis team traveled to San Francisco this past week and turned in another successful outing for the Blue Devils at the Battle in the Bay Classic held at the California Tennis Club.
Duke senior Shavit Kimchi advanced to the singles final before falling, 6-4, 6-2, to Patricija Paukstyte of Georgia. Kimchi, who hails from Sdey Hemed, Israel, recorded four victories on her way to the championship match. She knocked off Georgia's Ava Rodriguez, 6-7 (6-8), 6-1, 7-5, in the round of 32 and then totaled a 6-2, 6-2 win over Marianne Angel of UCSB. Kimchi collected a 6-7 (2-7), 7-5, 6-4 victory against Laura Cilekova of California in the quarterfinals and then posted a 6-4, 7-6 (7-1) win over Nadia Lagaev of Georgia in the semifinals.
The Blue Devils opened action Thursday and Friday with six singles wins by Kimchi, Claire An and Ava Krug. Duke placed three of the eight spots in the quarterfinals.
An notched a 6-7 (6-8), 6-2, 6-3 win against Alexia Harmon of Pepperdine and then posted a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Emma Tutoveanu of UCSB. Her run came to an end against Paukstyte with a 6-3, 6-2 loss.
Krug opened her play with a pair of wins against Lera Alexin of Colorado (6-1, 4-6, 6-2) and Naomi Xu of California (6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 6-1). She dropped a 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) decision to Nadia Lagaev of Georgia to end her run.
Duke's doubles duo of An and Krug posted an 8-3 win in the round of 16 versus Imogen Haddad and Lexi Wolf of Southern California before knocking off 78th-ranked Nika Hurkacz and Xu of California, 8-5, to move into the semifinals. An and Krug dropped an 8-5 match to Lily Pradkin/Angel of UCSB in the semifinals.
The Blue Devils will next compete in the ITA Fall Regionals Oct. 15-20 in Columbia, South Carolina.
