DAVIDSON, N.C.-- After scoring three first half goals, the 11th-ranked Duke women's soccer team cruised to a 7-0 victory over Davidson College (4-5) on Friday evening in Davidson, N.C., as seven different Blue Devils collected goals. With the victory, Duke Head Coach Robbie Church registered his 200th career win on the night.
"I was very impressed with how we prepared for this game," said Church. "We learned from our loss to UCLA and came out focused tonight. Our lone senior in the lineup, Gwendolyn Oxenham, set the tone early in the game with her pace and ball winning, which led to everyone else picking it their play. It was a solid performance and having seven different players score goals is outstanding."
The Blue Devils opened the first half with 19 shots and connected on their first goal at the 18th minute mark as Carolyn Ford found Kate Seibert for her fourth goal of the season. It marks the third time this year, the tandem of Ford and Seibert have connected on goals. Duke went up 3-0 in a span of four minutes as freshman Rebecca Moros scored her second career goal off a rebound from a Carolyn Riggs' shot and then Moros returned the favor crossing a perfect ball to Riggs for her team-leading sixth goal.
Duke came out of halftime and didn't let down as the Blue Devils notched three goals in just 11 minutes to take a commanding 6-0 advantage. Oxenham, junior Casey McCluskey and freshman Lauren Tippets each tallied goals for the Blue Devils. Freshman Sarah McCabe added her second career goal at the 74:51 mark to finish off Duke's 7-0 victory.
Picking up the victory in goal for the Blue Devils was junior Kate Straka, who finished evening with one save. Alexis Morant played the final 30 minutes in goal for the Blue Devils.
The seven goals scored by Duke on the night is the most scored in the three years under the direction of Church and the most since a 7-0 victory over Alabama in 1995. Duke finished the night with a season-high 33 shots.
The Blue Devils improve to 6-2-1 overall and will next travel to UNC Greensboro on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
