DURHAM, N.C. - It was a night where nothing would go right for the 10th-ranked Duke women's soccer team as Clemson picked up a 1-0 victory at Koskinen Stadium in Durham, N.C. The loss for the Blue Devils is the first at home and it marks the first time this season Duke has been shutout.
Duke falls to 11-4 overall, 4-2 in the ACC, while Clemson improves to 10-5, 4-3. The Blue Devils will next host Virginia Tech (7-5, 3-3) on Sunday at 2:00 p.m., in a match that will be senior day for goalkeeper Kate Straka, midfielder Lauren Simel and forward Casey McCluskey.
"Clemson had a great game plan, changed their formation early on and went at us," said Duke Head Coach Robbie Church. "In the first half, we didn't come out and play. In this league you have to come out and play. You have to play a 90-minute game in this league and we didn't do that tonight. We played well in the second half, but we just didn't finish well."
Clemson came out fired up against the Blue Devils as it took the Tigers only 8:39 to register the only goal of the evening. The goal came off a corner kick by Jenny Anderson that settled on the right side of the box and Britten Meyer was able to corral it and blast her first goal of the season from 15 yards out.
The Blue Devils had plenty of shots but none were a true opportunity to go in the goal until the 39th minute when freshman Lorraine Quinn had a left-footed rocket stopped by Clemson goalkeeper Lauren Johnston. Duke didn't even get a corner kick until the 41:30 mark of the first half but pushed it to far.
Duke freshman goalkeeper Allison Lipsher showed why she was an All-America selection in high school posting key saves off great shot attempts by Clemson's Amanda Garcia, Lindsay Browne and Kelly Schneider during a 20-minute span in the first stanza. The score would remain 1-0 at the end of the first half with Duke holding an 8-5 shot advantage.
Duke came out a different team in the second half with more energy and taking better shots, but the results were the same as Clemson's defense packed it in and the new goalkeeper, Ashley Phillips, made five huge saves.
The Blue Devils had three excellent chances at goals over the first 10 minutes of action in the second half-- Quinn took the ball down the left side of the goal box, but was taken down by a Tiger defender, and a no-call by the referee; McCluskey drove the ball down the left side of the box but Phillips was able to avoid a cross into the center of the goal; and Sarah McCabe rocketed a shot to the left side of the goal from 12 yards out but Phillips made a diving save.
Clemson's Phillips' made three more key stops down the stretch to hold on to the 1-0 victory for Clemson, which marked the sixth straight win for the Tigers over Duke. For the game, Duke outshot Clemson 15-6. It marks the first goal the Blue Devils have allowed this season at home as Duke has outscored opponents 28-1 this season in Durham.
"We are a mentally tough team and we will be ready to come back on Sunday," said Church. "Senior day is a very special time for us and they will be ready to play."
NOTES:
On Sunday, it will mark homecoming for Virginia Tech's Head Coach Kelly Cagle, who is the former Kelly Walbert and played at Duke from 1992-95. Cagle is the all-time leading scorer at Duke with 47 goals, holds the career points lead with 117 and led the Blue Devils to the NCAA Championship match in 1992 as a freshman. Her husband, Dan, is an assistant coach with the Hokies and is a former men's soccer assistant coach at Duke.
The contest against Virginia Tech on Sunday will feature the top-two leading scorers in the ACC with Duke's Casey McCluskey and Tech's Ashley Stinson. McCluskey leads the ACC with 13 goals, while Stinson owns 11. In the national rankings, McCluskey is eighth in the nation with 1.00 goals per match and Stinson is 20th (0.92). Sunday's match will mark the first ever meeting between the Blue Devils and Hokies.
