UNC Greensboro won five of the first seven matches en route to a 25-16 win over Duke, in a non-conference dual wrestling match at UNCG's Fleming Gymnasium Wednesday evening. UNCG improves to 5-5 overall, while Duke falls to 6-6.
UNCG opened the match winning both the 197-pound and heavyweight bouts by falls. Freshman Daren Burns improved his record to 16-8 on the season when he pinned Blue Devil senior Tim Marcantonio at 4:35. Senior John Kimble picked up his 10th win of the season when he pinned Roy Williams at 1:24.
Duke trimmed the deficit to 12-6 in the next match as freshman Christian Smith (125 lbs.) earned six points for the Blue Devils with his pin of Kyle Terrell at 1:58. Senior Adam Benitez improve his record to 18-10, with a 5-2 decision over UNCG's David Johnson, closing the gap to 12-9.
UNCG responded by winning the next three matches (141 lbs., 149 lbs., 157 lbs.). increasing its lead in the match to 22-9. The Spartan run was highlighted by a 18-7 major decision by freshman Nate Berryman over Andy Soliman.
Michael Mitchell scored a 12-4 major decision at 165-lbs. to move the score to 22-13 with two matches to go. UNC Greensboro then secured the win over the Blue Devils when junior Charles Jones edged Levi Craig, 8-6 in the 174-pound bout. Frank Cornely registered an 11-4 decision for Duke at 184-lbs. for a the final margin of 25-16.
Duke returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 14 when it hosts Virginia in the first home match of the season.
