The Duke University wrestling team hosts ACC foe N.C. State on Tuesday, Feb. 24 at 7:30 p.m. in a key conference battle at Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Blue Devils currently hold the top spot in the ACC with a 3-0 record, while N.C. State is second in the conference at 3-1. Duke has never posted more than three wins in conference play and is seeking to finish the year atop the ACC for the first time in school history.
Several Blue Devils have excelled over the course of the year, including Christian Smith, Adam Benitez and Levi Craig. All three wrestlers are 3-0 in conference matches at their respective weight classes. Smith is 26-12 on the year with an 11-3 dual meet mark. The 125-pound freshman leads Duke with eight wins by fall.
Benitez has won eight consecutive dual meet matches since settling into the starting spot at 133-lbs. The Santa Ana, Calif., native is 20-10 this season and 45-39 for his career. Craig, a 174-pounder, has won six of his last eight matches and is 17-17 overall.
Michael Mitchell has continued to move up in the Blue Devil record books in 2004. The 165-pound senior is 21-6 this season and has 87 career victories to rank seventh all-time at Duke. The Midwest City, Okla., native is 2-1 in ACC action.
At 184-lbs., senior Frank Cornely has compiled a 19-12 record with a 2-1 mark in ACC action. Tim Marcantonio, a senior 197-pounder, is also 2-1 in ACC matches.
